Description of 1967 Austin Healey 3000 |
1967 Healey 3000 BJ8MK III, HBJ8L37530, with 60,001 miles. I bought this handsome car last year from afriend's collection w/ the intent of doing a rolling restoration, but I'm still caught up in an MGA twin cam project that's taking all my time and energy. My friend kept it with about 60 other cars and only put 20 or so miles on it in 12 years. The family he bought it from owned it since 1973. I have some registration documents on that. Some recent maintenance: I had the tach and distributor rebuilt, put in a stainless steel free-flow exhaust and did the sway bar bushes, which were sacked. It had recently gotten a new brake booster and generator rebuild (previous owner). When I got it I pulled and cleaned the carbs, changed the oil, plugs, cables, and timed it to 15 degrees. It started right up. Motor runs strong w/ 150 lbs compression across all cylinders and good starting and idling oil pressure. Could certainly use finer carb tuningbeyond my skill-set. Engine compartment largely untampered-with (seems to be original wiring looms). Starts nicely, idles in the garage w/ no overheating, no unusual smoke, and surprisingly, no engine/gearbox leaks. All controls, brake/throttle/clutch work as they should. All gauges, switches and lights work. Overdrive works. I've driven it around the block, but basically put the car away at that point. Body/paint nice, but not perfect with a few small issues here and there. Paint has been on the car for at least 20 years. Chrome very nice but also not perfect. Interior excellent. Top is excellent. There is a new top boot (new in bag) that needs to have clips installed. Beautiful hand-made Mike Lempert steering wheel.Painted wire wheels very nice. Solid underbody from early protective coating (clean paint behind coating) I suspect at some point the driver sills will want to be done (a magnet test shows some filler in the sills, but not elsewhere) and there is a patch-panel in the driver's floor pan. Driver's window, mechanism and seals need some work. The right-hand fender mirror is missing. There are two very small dents at the front wing that can easily be popped out by a dent doctor. I'm sure the suspension bushings and dampers will want to be renewed. Note please that this car has some needs, it is not a show car as it stands, and it's priced accordingly. I've chosen to leave many things alone and not 'tart' the car up: the engine bay is as I got it and could benefit from a thorough going-over. The underside of the car is protected by 30 years of oil and grease that I've not tried to clean up. I've specifically priced the car on the low end to make it an easy transaction for both sides. Please feel free to inspect the car before you purchase -- reach out to me and we can exchange contacts. I'm not a Healey expert, but own MGs, Triumphs, Datsuns and Lotuses. I believe this car could be used as a great platform for a top-flight restoration or driven as is for years with just a little TLC. Car will be sold with transferable clear NJ title. I can help w/ shipping in that I can be here when your shipper arrives. No warranty of any type.Paypal fine if we split the fee. Thanks much for looking and good luck. |
