Description of 1939 Austin Bantam Hotrod |
W3.CSS 1939 Austin Bantam Hotrod Coupe When did compact cars debut? It was before the famed Mini Cooper and the quirky Isetta. While not the first small car, this little gem could practically fit in the trunk of many other vehicles on the market. In 1939, Austin debuted the Bantam - slightly different than what you see here today. This unique classic is not chopped or cropped but does feature lots of hot-rod favorites. This two-seater is power by a reliable 350 V8 which produces an estimated 375HP, which is more than enough to lift the wheels off the ground. The power flows through the 2-speed powerglide transmission to a Ford 9" 3.70:1 rear axle. Front disc and rear drum brakes provide the stopping power. There is no need for power steering. It does have a skid bar along with front and rear radiators which include auxiliary cooling fans. Little details abound including a auto-tensioner for the pullies and in-distributor electronic ignition, and Painless wiring harness. Massive 31X16.00R15 Mickey Thompson rear tires grip the road, while the 165/80/15 front tires guide you on your path. This street rod's interior is basic with seatbelts for two, a tilt wheel, basic controls, and all the VDO gauges you could want. Outside, the original steel body shines in fresh red paint. Study the up-close photos closely and you will see a metallic fleck in the paintwork on the grill, upper cowl, and around the car's beltline. It is subtle but it is there and is one of those little extra details. This car was lovingly put together over the past four years, is complete and ready to enjoy. If you are looking for a street rod like no other, this mighty coupe might be just what you are looking for.
