Description of 1927 Austin Seven Chummy

Here's a neat one for ya! Offered up for sale by an avid collector of unique unusual and most often rare original classics, we have this tremendous little 1927 Austin Seven Chummy. This car is an absolute hoot to show off, and to drive around town running errands and grabbing brunch! Said to be the oldest example here in the US, this early 1927 model is a super desirable magneto car, and this little brute fires up via the starter button or a swift spin of the crank start. Ash wrapped alloy body, steel hood and fenders, canvas top. Very original from the top to the upholstery. This car was most recently purchased a few years back from a museum collection at auction and occasionally used around town and to start curious conversations since. Equipped with super rare rear luggage rack as well for all your belongings on that cross country road trip ;)Here is a write up done at a museum exhibit in which it was displayed:--------------------------------

1927 Austin Seven"Chummy" Tourer

In 1921, Sir Herbert Austin decided to build a light auto to compete with the 'Baby' Peugeot and appeal to the buyer who would normally spend his transportation budget on the purchase of a motorcycle-side car combination. Such an offering, Austin initially decided, would be powered by a vertically opposed twin engine of sufficiently small displacement to take advantage of the Finance Act of 1920, lowering the car tax to 1 pound per RAC-rated horsepower. His twin never materialized. But the Austin Seven did.

With the assistance of Stanley Howard Edge, a young man of seventeen employed as a draftsman in Sir Herbert's auto plant, the planning of the Austin Seven began in earnest in September of 1921. (Young Stanley was given the billiards room of Sir Herbert's home to use as a drafting studio.)

By Easter of 1922, the design of the Seven was complete, and shortly after, the prototype XL1 was built.

Other prototypes--and the production of automobiles--swiftly followed, Austin Sevens being produced until the onset of WWII. It assumed custom dachwork (as the Arrow and Swallow), provided the basis for many one-off specials, and it went racing in both supercharged and unsupercharged.

Through licensing arrangements, the Seven was built by American Austin (later known as Bantam), BMW (as the Dixie and BMW). Datsun and Jaguar (originally as the Swallow.) Immediately after the Second World War, Colin Chapman went racing in an Austin Seven-based special, a car that was to give birth to the Lotus. of fact, until his death, Chapman owned a1926 Austin Seven 'Chummy' Tourer, a car virtually indistinguishable from this one--down to the body color and upholstery.

- The car on display today was originally licensed in New Zealand. (Like Henry Ford, Austin built a large share of his automobiles for the export market.) It was brought to the United States by Douglas Dexter (then of Kennett Square, Pa.--now of Sandwhich, Mass) who readied the car for the road.

Incidentally, the car displayed is maintained and preserved but not restored. The upholstery (excepting the carpet) as well as the top irons and the Rexine top are original, as are all sheet metal parts (The fenders are steel: the body, aluminum over ash.) Though some power train and electrical system parts have been repaired or rebuilt, all of the parts under the hood are factory and original to this machine.

In 1996, this car was awarded the HCCP's Pancoast Trophy, an award given out to cars which are "the most unusual or interesting" shown at the club's spring or fall meets.

Available records show this car to, be the oldest Austin Seven in the United States.
