Description of 1994 BMW 5-Series |
Calypso Red Metallic over Parchment leather One of the first 540’s sold in the US- March 1993 build date. No Passenger airbag One family owned before me. Purchased from son of original owner. Purchased new at Tulley BMW in Nashua, NH May, 1993. Have all manuals, original window sticker, and original temporary registration slip from May 1993.
Original Nikasil engine replaced circa 1999 at circa 60k miles under warranty by Tulley BMW withAlusilengine, meaning replacement engine has only around 39k miles on it. Tried to obtain paperwork on this when I purchased car, dealer stated records that old had been purged. However, have confirmed with the numbers stamped in the block that the car has a replacement Alusil engine dated correctly. Mostly original car with all original body panels. No known or apparent collision damage ever. (per Son and my inspections)
Undercarriage is solid. No rot! This is not an Arizona car so there is a bit of paint flaking and scale on some of the suspension components and fasteners. No rust or soft spots in the floors, rockers or jack points. No rust or bubbles on the body in the usual E34 places. Car was driven minimally if at all in the winter for the first few years and not at all recently. Original owner reportedly wintered down south and parked the car. Car was always garaged by prior owner and by myself. Interior excellent. Very slight wear on driver’s seat, minimal to no wear on anything else.
Car was built with an automatic transmission. The 6 speed was not offered in the US market until 1995 model year, though it was offered in Europe and other markets. Upon purchase of the car, I set about on a transmission swap with one of the approx. 1524 factory built 1995 540/6 which I already owned. This was not a hodgepodge build with parts being soured from all over, ALL the 6 speed related parts came off one car. The ’95 6 speed was an enthusiast owned running driving car with 180k miles but suffered from severe body rust, bad paint, and cracked bumpers. I decided I would get a better end product by transplanting the 6 speed to a nice automatic car than trying to restore the factory 6 speed car. So now there is one less factory built US market 540/6 and one additional (one only?) 1994 model. Complete transmission swap between both 540’s was commenced June 2016 and completed July 2016. Other than the VIN sticker my car can now not be told from a factory built 6 speed car. Nothing was hacked, and not one wire was cut on this car during the swap. Everything still works like it should, including cruise control. All factory 6 speed components were swapped over from the factory 6 speed car. Shift linkage bushings, etc. were refreshed at time of swap. This car has the correct 2.93 rear diff ratio that was used with ’95 6 speeds. ’95 autos were downgraded to a 2.81 ratio for MPG rating improvement but 1994 automatics like mine were built with the 2.93. A DUD-MD performance chip with 6 speed throttle calibration programming was installed.
Car runs and drives beautiful, quiet and docile when you want it to be and an enthusiastic extrovert when you want it to me. Goes down the road like a much newer car. Controlled but supple ride, no rattles, squeaks, etc. No dash error lights are on, everything works except memory seat function. Original radio. I added “factory” dealer installed BMW 6 CD changer in the trunk from one of my other cars. Car is kept detailed to “show ready” condition and is turn key. One of the cleanest, straightest, unmolested E34 540’s out there. Maine does not issue titles to vehicles prior to 1995 model year. Will be sold with valid registration copy and Bill of Sale. Also have NH title signed over by prior owner but date and buyer spaces left blank which could probably be used.
