Description of 1971 BMW Other |
1971 BMW 2800 CS To best present the car as it sits, here is the full story. Back sometime in 1984, I was running a small BMW repair facility in New Orleans area. One of my best friends was looking for something fun to drive around. Found a Sahara Beige 2800 coupe, 4 speed for him. Local car. Time went by, he enjoyed it, decided to have a friend of his paint it and do some rust repair with fresf new OE metal. Well, as he puts it, I convinced him to strip the car down completely, let me do the engine for him, and hey, this way the proposed color change would be done correctly. Everything came out, it went to Eddie's Body Shop, Through my shop relationship with the local dealer, I ordered every single rubber and trim piece for the car. Even front ¼ window gaskets, etc etc etc. Drip rail moulding, window seal bright trim, etc etc. List below. New complete nose panel, fenders, rockers, and spare tire wel, all OE were brought to the body shop. Work took quite a while, floors were "repairedâ€. At this time, there were no reproduction floor panels available as there are now. Finally, the car was blue, I completed the engine, trans rebuilt by Metric Mechanic, suspension and other major mechanicals done. But the car was still apart. We both had small families, I moved my sho, this and that over the years, it was stored in owners climate controlled garage. No trim or interior or exterior trim. Tons of boxes with parts. Year 2006 or so, my friend coerced me into putting the thing back together for him, Part time, this took quite a while. During this time, the wood was sent off to be re-veneered, interior was ordered, carpet ordered, OE headliner installed, sunroof cables on and on. It was running on older weber carbs quite well. Was made reliable with new cooling system, ac condenser and aux fan, new lines, but ac not completed. Driven now and then, stored in climate controlled garage, owner enjoyed it, looked nice. Then slowly it wasn't driven much, window stuck in down position, I got the car back early 2019. Deciding to sell it, I set about getting new Weber carbs, machining a new linkage set, replacing pedal and linkage bushings. Fuel pump, filter and press regulator replaced also. At this time, the drivers side window motor was retrofitted with a newer style motor and adjusted/lubed. Note, rear windows are locked up, needs work on motors. Front switches are new. At present, car drives nicely with strong motor. Reliable with new electronics. Every trim piece is new and on the car. Honest assessment of the body; All new OE panels are there. Trunk spare tire well was installed nicely. Rockers on these require integration to front fenders and rear quarters. These areas are a bit lacking. Could be re-done properly. There are flaws in the paint on trunk and hood corner areas. Paint prep. Right side frame rail under repaired floor is well described as "tenderâ€. Now, splice in rails are available. Having been in doors, they are solid. This Body Shop was kinda more of a collision place. Plus, it wasn't meant to be a full on resto at the time. Owner was pleased with it. Quite frankly, this could be driven as is. Complete the a/c and windshield washers. Or if you are looking to fully restore one of these, you get all the new parts on the car, have a virtually new engine, rebuilt trans, suspension bushings etc etc. See list. Contact me with any specific questions. ENGINE / TRANS /EXHAUST OE new cylinder hea, valves, springs, rockers etc. OE reman crank with appropriate bearings, pistons, rings, pin bushings, oil pump, head bolts, main bolts. New Bosch ignition distributor, wires, coil, plugs. Motor mounts. Cooling system and hoses, BMW blue coolant and distilled water. Done right. But lost build sheet. New Weber carbs, custom linkage. New alternator, starter, battery and wiring. Metric Mechanic rebuilt original 4 speed, new clutch assy. Guibo and center support. New a/c condenser mounted with new lines, dryer and aux electric front fan, needs completion. Owner says I have new rotary compressor and mount kit, will have to search attic to confirm. Older center exhaust with newer rear exhaust and tail pipe. But rear exhaust was hung by local muffler shop and could be redone much better.
