Description of 1954 Buick Super 56R

1954 Buick Super 56R 2 Door Hardtop

Up for auction is a 54 Super coupe. I bought it with the intention of making a nice driver out of it, and another project has come up, o this one has to go to make room. Below is a list of what I know about the car. I do my best to cut out the BS involved with buying cars like this, o read thoroughly. When buying cars over the internet, t is always a good idea to have a 3rd party inspect the car so that the possibility of any surprises is limited. OR you can see it for yourself if you're close enough. I have posted over 40 photos of the car below. Hopefully, hey cover the areas of major concern.

Shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer, ut I will assist in the logistics of pickup and loading.

Paint
Unless you don't care about what the car look like, t will need paint. I'm not sure how old this paint is, ut it's definitely not original. Possibly one of those cheapie specials from years ago. I could be cut and buffed, ut the amount of work involved in getting the orange peel out is much more time consuming than I was willing to invest. Plus, ll you end up with is a shiny paint job with a bunch of dents and scratches all over the place.

Sheet Metal
For the most part, t is a very solid car. Photos show the bad spots in the rear corners of the fenders and quarters. The rockers are wavy and have mud in them, ut it appears the mud is just filling some dents, nd not hiding any rust. There is some rust around the rear window as shown in the photos, ut it's not rusted through.

Exterior Chrome/brightwork
The stainless trim is in pretty good condition, few dings but nothing serious. Chrome parts are driver quality. Bumpers are solid, ut have a couple dings and scratches, ome minor pitting. The grille is in excellent shape. Hood ornament is intact, s they are often broken (front spear is broken off from people using it as a handle to open the hood).

Glass
There are no cracks in any of the glass. There is some light delamination around some of the edges as typical. Also some fogging at the drivers side lower windshield. It does not effect visibility.

Wheels/Tires
The tires look new, ery good tread on them, nd no dry rot. The wheels appear to have been painted or powercoated recently. They are in nice shape. Hubcaps are decent driver quality.

Undercarriage
Lots of surface rust as most of the cars this age look. No rot in the frame or any of the rocker/body mount areas. Trunk floor is solid as a rock. Only some small holes in the passenger front floor board. There is undercoating flaking off all over the place, iving the appearance that there is major rust in the photos. I assure you, t is solid. I wish my 60 convertible was this solid!!

Brakes
The car has brakes, ut I have no power assist. Power booster will more than likely need a rebuild. Emergency brake works. I have driven it around town to give it exercise and it will stop, t just takes some extra effort due to the booster being dead.

Suspension
I have not done any real inspections on this portion of the car, ut nothing feels out of line. It drives straight and does not pull left or right when braking. Power steering seems to work just fine. It is all OLD, though. I would not be surprised if several of the suspension parts are worn or need replacement.

Rubber parts/Weatherstripping
Most if it is intact and still pliable. There are two new quarter window seals that come with the car.

Engine
When I bought the car, t was running off a Mountain Dew bottle full of gas with a cheap electric fuel pump, nd had a dead miss in one cylinder. Inspection revealed a stuck intake valve on #3 cylinder. The head was removed and the valve was repaired. The engine was reassembled with new gaskets and I painted the top half of the engine to the correct color. I also cleaned and detailed a few other things before reinstalling. The choke heat tube broke off inside the exhaust manifold, nd I have not repaired it, o it is hard to start initially. Once warmed up, t runs much smoother. The transmission seems to do its job just fine. It leaks a bit, ust like most other Dynaflows do :) The radiator was just boiled out and one small leak was repaired. ALL hoses were replaced, ncluding the 33 feet of heater hose that runs all over the car. It does run from the gas tank and the stock fuel pump, ow.

Interior
It needs carpet, bviously. Front seat upholstery is shot. The rear seat is in good condition, ut the bottom black insert could be redyed. The headliner is decent, ith one stain in the rear right side at one of the bows. The interior chrome has some pitting but shines decent. The steering wheel is pretty nice, ith some very light cracking on the lower half of the wheel. The dashboard could use a little help. Some paint fading and scratches. Speedometer works just fine. Some of the heater/air control cables are frozen. Wipers do not work, adio does not work. Other gauges appear to work fine.

Electrical
Headlights work. There are a few bulbs that will need replacement. I have not checked the brake lights, ut bought a new switch for it...did not get around to installing, hough. Charging system looks good, nd I bought a new battery for it.
