Description of 1958 Buick Riviera Model 750 |
1958 Buick Riviera Limited 4 Door Hardtop Model 750 364 CID V8 300 HP 4BBL Barn Find This Limited was backed into this barn is October 1997 and has rested under a tarp until being pulled into the light of day this morning. It rolled and steered freely. These Limiteds are rare; only 5,571 were built in 1958; if 10% (optimistic) survived, there would only be 56 remaining - nearly as rare as a Tucker. Because this car has been in storage, I did not attempt to start it. The gas tank will need to be drained of degraded gasoline (a mixture of varnish and rusty water - likely the color and fuel value of root beer) and cleaned to prevent the fouling of the fuel lines, fuel pump, carburetor, and intake manifold. I will leave that chore to the next owner. The carburetor appears to have been rebuilt - see photo. See all photos to understand condition. I applied a vivid filter to the first photo; the rest are straight-up; please review them carefully. I will describe and disclose everything that I observed. One common characteristic of barn finds is mice damage. The headliner is hanging down above the driver’s seat - I captured that in one photo; this appears to be due to mice. The odor of mouse urine is clearly present. The trunk also has been visited by mice. Speaking of the trunk, there are rust holes in the bottom and sides of the trunk; the bottom of the trunk is in poor condition, as can be seen in several photos, including the exterior of the rear quarter panels. There is a bumper jack, lug wrench, and spare tire in the trunk Ahead of the rear wheels, the body is in fairly good shape, with the exception of rust-through in several spots around both headlights. The rocker panels look strong and the frame looks good too. The doors open and close well. I did not try to open the back driver’s side door, as the inside door panel has been removed; it is in the trunk. The sill plate for the driver’s door was not present, so I pulled up the carpet for a picture - the floor looks good. See photos regarding condition of paint and chrome; some is good and other areas not so much. Many areas of paint contain surface cracks; there is a lot of this on the hood; the top and trunk lid are better. I took pictures of the spare parts; some of the parts not seen on the body are in boxes. For instance, the eyebrow (two pieces) above the driver’s side headlight is in a box. There is one chip the size of a nickel on the windshield, high above the steering wheel. The radio and antenna are missing. There is a power brake master cylinder/booster from a newer car in the trunk, likely acquired for an upgrade that never occurred. The tires (5) have most of their tread. After 21 years, they still had about half of their pressure. They are tubeless Achievor Nostalgic Radials - P235/75-R15. There are four wheel covers - not stock caps. I included 4 pictures under the hood. The generator has been replaced by a one wire alternator; a nice functional update though not stock. The carburetor looks fresh; everything appears to be present, including power steering. The engine rotates; I turned it by hand using the fan. No battery present. It looks like it wants to run. I was tempted to get it going but thought better of it. The car has one key, which is for the ignition, doors, trunk, and glove box. I am going to post a walk-around YouTube video, which will at times include one of my fingers, so that you can get a feel for the car with the continuity of a video.
