Description of 1949 Buick Super Series 50 |
1949 Buick Series 50 Super Sedan More pictures to be posted soon. Please feel free to ask any questions. 80,600 Miles on the ODO Appears to be Original Condition Power-Train. The engine fires up very easily, whether hot or cold. The carburetor appears to be at optimum tune... Engine purrs quietly and smooth. I updated the Fuel system with an Electric Pump and all new Aluminum Plumbing from Tank to Carb. There is an updated pre-pump filter and pre-carb filter in place. The unique starter-switch circuit on the accelerator works flawlessly. I updated the ignition system with electronic module to replace the points. The distributor cap, rotor, coil, wires and spark plugs were also replaced with updated modern components. The original 6 volt generator charging system works flawlessly. I updated the entire front clip / under-hood harness to SAE J1128 heavy-gauge pure-copper wiring. The engine begins to burn oil if it is idling too long... burns clear while driving. Engine oil seeps from underside of engine... I am not sure if it is the pan gasket or other seal. Engine maintains good oil pressure when at all operating temperatures. The engine coolant maintains cool temperature under all operating conditions. I am not sure of water pump history and as preventative measure, would replace it if I kept the car much longer. The DynaFlow transmission functions amazingly well in both L or D Forward and Reverse. Transmission Fluid drips from rear seal. Shocks need to be refilled with oil. Steering functions well. Car tracks well when driven. Brakes function well. I will be replacing both front Hydraulic Hoses and Re-packing Front Wheel Bearings before sale. The exhaust is quiet. The tail pipe is showing some pin holes and will need replacement. The clock and fuel level gauge do not work. The dash night illumination lamps work. The speedometer, odometer, trip odometer, oil pressure gauge and water temperature gauge function as they should. The Coker Wide-Whites are healthy and the perfect height for accurate speedometer reading. The wheel covers are 1948 Buick. I recently updated the four rubber valve stems with chrome metal. This vintage Buick cruises the freeways at 55mph effortlessly. I purchased this Buick on a whim about 2 months ago. The car's history I gathered is vague... It has been in the State of Hawaii since about 2012. The car was born in Michigan and spent the first 50 or so years there. It was restored, I'm guesstimating in 2006, in Georgia... which included Body Work, Paint and Interior. Body work included the addition of a 4th Port Hole to each Fender, for the RoadMaster appeal. The Front Bumper has the RoadMaster Insignia. The body was originally a maroon color, but was repainted black, including all door jams, trunk lid and hood / engine bay. The car is currently a "10-footer" .... any closer than that and you'll see flaws developing under the High-Gloss Black Paint. There are 2 rust spots that should be tended to... the roof panel above the passenger side rain gutter and the rear panel which houses the trunk latch are both bubbling under the paint. Other than those 2 spots, the other flaws in paint look to be from prep work. There is no other rust to mention. All the glass is in good condition. All the windows roll up and down effortlessly and smoothly. The vacuum windshield wipers work as they did in 1949... the washer system is missing. Even the vent windows on all four doors open and shut smoothly. The one time I got caught in heavy rain, no water leaked into the passenger cabin. The trunk gasket leaked on the bottom edge. The door key cylinders, latches, hinges and locking mechanisms work as they should. All of the exterior lights, front to back, work as they should and the lenses are all in good condition. The hood opens from either side. The latches and hinges function well. I recently replaced the hood release cables with OEM design and quality. The trunk key cylinder, latch and hinges all function well. The body chrome is in good condition, with the exception of some pitting. The rear skirts are in excellent condition and are easily remove-able as designed. The interior was completely re-done in green. The Steering Wheel is out of a 53 RoadMaster. The front seat is out of a 40's RoadMaster. The sliding mechanism works well. The upper & lower cushions are easily removable... as is the frame if need be. The rear seats appear unused. There is a fold down center arm rest. The headliner is in excellent condition. The sun visors appear to be 80s era. Currently, the interior lights are not working. I will wire in a dash switch to some of the lighting. The under-seat cabin heater is all in place. I have yet to try it. The flow thru vents and blower function well. The trunk compartment is completely upholstered in gray, including the spare tire cover and bumper-jack pouch. I think that covers the car front to back, top to bottom. As mentioned above, I purchased this Buick 2 months ago on a whim, to fill the void of a family cruiser. I've enjoyed owning it and learning the History of Classic Buicks. I've enjoyed tinkering with it and working on Buick's unique Straight8 / DynaFLow. But, I need a truck more than I need a family cruiser... and I am selling this Buick to make space for a multi-truck project. Clean and Clear Hawaii Title.
