For 1953, the big news at General Motors was the Motorama show-car inspired Eldorado, which along with the Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Fiesta, heralded the massive company’s landmark 50th anniversary. Long, low and well equipped with comfort and convenience items, the Series 62-based Eldorado famously carried newly elected U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, on the January 1953 inaugural parade through Washington. Reprised for 1954 and 1955, the Eldorado previewed the latest stylistic and engineering advancements at GM as Cadillac’s most glamorous and expensive model to date. In addition to a power boost to 270 HP, changes to the Eldorado for 1955 were detail-oriented in nature, most notably including a new rear-fender treatment with a pair of rounded tail lights placed halfway up the fenders, terminating in pointed tailfins. This rear styling would continue essentially unchanged through 1956 and reach ultimate expression for 1959-60. Eldorado sales continued their uptrend for 1955, with pricing from $6,286. Very rare as one of 3,950 examples produced, this glamorous 1955 Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado Convertible was formerly part of a 100-car museum collection. Finished in Alpine White over two-tone red and white leather upholstery, it is handsomely complemented by a new power-operated canvas convertible top, factory-original three-piece hard parade boot cover and new, red Daytona-weave carpeting. Power is delivered by Cadillac’s proprietary 331/270 HP V-8 engine equipped with factory dual-quad carburetors beneath a “Batwing” air cleaner assembly plus a set of chrome rocker covers, and mated with a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Features and options are numerous and include the Autronic Eye automatic headlamp dimmer, AM radio, in-dash clock and power window lifts. Chrome bumpers include through-the-bumper exhaust outlets at the rear, and full-size wheel covers and period-style wide whitewall tires provide additional curb appeal. The 1955 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible is an undoubted collector favorite.
