1958 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Series Special Cadillac was on a roll back in the 1950s. They had the cars, the style, the appeal. It was the brand of automobile that every American aspired to own. The kind of car that clearly made its presence known, quietly profiling its owner as a success. Back then, when someone bought a Cadillac, he felt that he had made it. It was the best sign of accomplishment that anyone could hope for. We bring to you a consignment in the form of a 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Series Special in 4 door hardtop form (this writer's personal fav). Sporting all the 50's excess you can dream of in one very large package. Yes, she's rough around the edges but mostly complete with a few trim pieces missing but oozes everything that the American dream was about in the 1950's. Exterior Bathed in what we surmise is the original Cheviot Gray paint this long wide beauty presents well with areas of paint thinning on the flat surfaces especially the trunk lid. A chrome tipped eggcrate style grille floats behind an enormous chrome bumper with the quintessential black rubber tipped dagmars and shows with some wear and fading of the aforementioned chrome. The Cadillac cloisonn sits proudly above the chromed V at the front of the hood, so everyone knew that you were driving the best. Menacing quad headlights sit in chrome bezels that melt back into trim spears that run down the upper body ending mid front door. The spears start back up again mid rear door on a body bump and flow into quad taillights. These spears top off lower quarter panel trim that runs mid door to rear bumper. Totally groovy! A larger than life rear bumper hangs proudly, while showing some staining is still presentable. Now the best for last, tail fins. Pure sex in design for this writer, twin chrome trimmed fins emanate mid rear quarter panel and grow with chrome trim tops that drip down into the mid body bulge. With all this you've got it made in the shade. Interior A swing of the driver's door reveals a padded pleated upper door section in an ebony charcoal. A center chromed trim piece continues from the dash trim and sits atop a gray broadcloth and vinyl lower section. Power seat controls are located in a chromed bezel and look fine and dandy like peppermint candy. Soiling is present on all door panels but should clean up and look snappy. A lightly water stained front bench seat in broadcloth stretches from door to door and contains a center armrest, rips and tears present especially on the driver's side. The rear seat stretches to door to door also and shows in a different cloth pattern from the front. A thick biscuit and button pattern give it some pizazz. A stained, worn, and faded gray carpet floods the floor and should be replaced. A tight gray headliner hangs above and is a visual delight. The original steering wheel juts from the steering column and includes the instantly recognizable Cadillac crest. The gray steel padded dashboard is dripping with gobs of chrome and britework. From the power window switches, instrument cluster surround, AM radio, to the HVAC controls, chrome is the word and it shines beautifully. Drivetrain Opening the massive hood exposed the heart of this beast. 364ci of Cadillac V8 spewing out a tire roasting 310 horsepower. That power is transferred thru a 4-speed Hydramatic transmission and back to a 3.07 geared axle. We note power steering, air conditioning, a missing air cleaner assembly, and a missing treadle vac brake assembly. Undercarriage A strong and solid X frame supports this beauty. Undercoating covers the floors and body hangers; the one area of concern appears on the driver's rear floor pan and seems to be a tear in the metal. Removing the undercoating will show the extent of the damage. Independent coil spring front suspension and a 4 link with coil springs give this car it's signature Cadillac ride. Power drum brakes bring this car to a halt. We note dual exhaust that is in need of replacement. A mostly complete car that oozes 50's style and excess. Chrome, fins, some neato options and a proper picture of Cadillac styling for 1958 make this car worth saving. Slip into your best suit and visit the Classic Auto Mall.
