Description of 1978 Chevrolet El Camino |
Youtube Video link: https://youtu.be/XAnsLbxYESM Car started life as a 78 GMC DIABLO and as you can see, as been badged as a Chevy SS El Camino. No difference at all in the two models except the gmc versions were usually more heavily optioned than the Chevy models. This one has a few of those upgrades like tilt wheel (tilt wheel is good and tight), auge dash instruments (not idiot lights), hin spoiler and the bigger 350 cubic inch V8. Paint is new base coat/clear coat PPG, ade to look like the SS. Don't expect a 10k trailer queen paint job but as you can see in the pics and video it is very nice. The body was completely solid with no rust issues at all before paint. Panels were straight with no major dents before paint. Chrome is good driver quality. Has the upgrade front valance/chin spoiler which goes a long way toward the looks of this body style. Spray in bed liner is new and the bed floor looks really good. Has had an easy life with with no heavy loads. The driveline has the bigger V8 for this era. a 350 with 4 barrel carb instead of the more common 305. Transmission is the Turbo 350 automatic. Both run very well with no problems or leaks. Neither one were rebuilt that I know of but as I said, un great with no problems. Interior Has new seat upholstery, ew headliner, ew dash cap and new carpet. Door panels and remaining plastic pieces were cleaned and dyed. Has factory air shocks on rear. Front shocks look recent and probably are because the car rides really nice with a tight feeling suspension and steering. Brakes work good and car stops nice and straight. Wheels are 15 inch camaro rims with decent tires. Dual exhaust sounds good. AC works really good and blows nice and cold. Heater works as well. Nice to know stuff: All the safety inspection related stuff works. Blinkers, rake lights, right/dim headlights and wipers all work. Horn does not work. Oil press and gas gauge work correctly but temp gauge and voltmeter do not. I added a manual temp gauge which shows that it runs cool with no problems. Windshield has 2 BB dings and a small 3 inch horseshoe shaped crack on pass side that starts and finishes out to the edge so it can't get any bigger. None of it is in the way of the drivers vision. Speedometer works good and is correct within 2 mph per my gps (shows 60 when actual speed is 58). I have driven this car locally for about 500 miles with no problems but if you choose to make a long distance trip, f course, ou do it at your own risk. These last gen El Caminos have reached classic status but are still a fantastic value compared to the more mainstream muscle cars. Here is a chance to own a classic drive-in cruiser for a fraction of what it normally costs. Nice El Caminos like this get more than their fair share of thumbs up and double takes, assure you.
