Description of 1961 Chevrolet Impala |
This is my personal vehicle. When I first bought it, built it for a show car. But then I took it out to the track and raced it. I won trophies, received mention in Super Chevy magazine. I have been on Pinks. I was interviewed at the 2010 inaugural NHRA Unleashed in Gainesville, l - home of the Gator Nationals which is about 10 miles from my house. I have taken Editor's Choice Drag Racing Top 5 awards several times. When I bought the car, t came with a 283 power glide. Then I went mad, took that out and found a 383 stroker engine with the 144 blower already on top which was taken out of a Corvette. From there, had a custom 1-piece driveshaft made for it and a custom built 700R4 transmission. I also had a 68 12 bolt posi traction rear end in my shop, o I took the old rear end out and had the brackets cut off with a plasma cutter. I set the whole 12 bolt up to fit under my car. On the top of the 12 bolt, here are 2 places for the upper control arms. I welded pieces of metal to the frame so I could use the pivoting A arms for it. It has worked out really well. I still have the original U jointson the front and back on the driveshaft. I had the 2 wheels on the back custom made from American Racing. This car has not been cut up at all. The wheels in the back are P255/50 R16 ET street radials. I ran the car like that for many years until a few years ago, hen I would start it up cold - like what you would you hear when the flywheel is too close to the starter. That went on for a while, ntil I figured out that was not the problem. I pulled the engine and started to take it apart. I took the head off and saw that one of the cylinders had been sleeved improperly. So the sleeve was starting to slide down to the crankshaft. So, very time I started it, he crank would hit the sleeve. I got rid of all that and kept the blower. I then built a brand new engine. I built the same thing, 383. I bought everything brand new from the block up. I installed a Scat 400 crank. Then I went to Probe Industries and installed their lightweight I beam broads and their SRS Chevy 383/DH. I also installed a pair of AFRC/SB - C/SB-210cc/75cc heads. I had a pair custom made headers - 1 7/8 headers made for those heads. The heads are CNC'd with angled plugs. I topped off the heads with Scorpionblue rocker arms. - 1/5SB 7/16 with a mild nitrous comp cam. All ARP nuts and studs. It has a TCI break away converter. I had the transmission freshened up, t is all brand new. At that time, put an all new posi unit and axles in the rear end, upplied by Randy's ring and pinion. They are 33 SP. Everything from front to rear is brand new, o more than 50 miles on it. It has power steering and brakes. It has a BeCool radiator. The car weighs 3995 with me in it. I have taken it down the track 3 or 4 times - the fastest I have gone in the 1/4 mile is 11.88. Now mind you, have never shifted this care, let the car shift itself. I have not had it dyno'd, ut I am thinking somewhere around 800hp. This is all on pumped gas and a manual fuel pump. I do have the smaller pulley on the B&M blower. I do have the original pulley which makes it more economic for street driving. All the pulleys that make up the serpentine are supplied by Street and Performance. I have the a/c compressor and the pulleys that make it complete for a/c as you can see in the pictures. This car was painted 20 years ago with Emron. It has held up great except for a few little dings. There is a little bit of rust coming up on the trunk lid where it sits out of my garage. I have never washed this car with the hose, t has all been done by hand. As you can see in the pictures, t needs the side trim. All emblems and bowtie accessories are brand new. There are new window gaskets all around, ront and rear windshields included. The chrome pieces were stored in the trunk when I bought it and they are pretty scratched up. When I did the interior, decided to have all the chrome pieces covered with material. All door handles, nobs and dome lights are brand new. I had custom wiring done by Frank Lawryhere in Gainesville, L. I built the dash myself with autometer gauges, ll electronic. I adapted a 68 Camaro cowl induction hood to the original hood. There are tons of extra parts in the trunk. At 130mph all you need Is one hand on the wheel.
