Description of 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza |
Gorgeous Restored 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible with 88,600 actual miles, ccording to the previous owner, nd the odometer supports it. The car is in excellent condition. The person who did the rebuild on it documented the full process they went through and you will see photos included here that show some of his process. This car is strong and solid. Triple black (top - interior - paint) is a rare combination and makes this Corvair look very "race" . I always get at least 3-4 comments on it when I have it out. It's really fun to get it out on the road. You can see a video of the car at:http://youtu.be/a5Mw_dOls0k I think the Corvairs are seriously overlooked. As you can see in the photos the styling of the Corvair is very similar to the Camaro. I think it's cooler looking than the Camero but I'm biased. You can also get this Corvair for ½ or maybe even a ¼ of what a Camero in this condition would sell for. The Corvair is not as fast as the V8 Chevys but I've driven both and the Corvair, ith its rear engine, andles far better. The front of the car does not sway around on a turn like the big engine American muscle cars. With the rear engine it goes around a corner flat and quick. This makes it very fun to drive and the lighter weight unibody and 6 cylinder give it plenty of speed. My feeling is that driving fast just gets you tickets and when do you really do that? The fun is in the handling! And that makes every corner fun! Nader is referred to frequently when Corvairs are mentioned but his book was focused on the rear suspension of the first generation Corvair (which was actually the same suspension as Volkswagon and Porsches of the time). This car is the second generation and as some research will show you, he second generation had a different rear end in it. Actually it is the same rear end as the Corvette! According to the owner who rebuilt the engine it has less than 5000 miles on the rebuild and was completely rebuilt down to the bare block. The engine is the 164 turbo-air, 40 horsepower (see the photo with the very cool 140 horse power emblem on the back engine lid). The six cylinder engine sports a custom high-rise four-barrel intake manifold. This provides for the four-barrel carburetor that is shinny new (see photo). This eliminates the separate carburetors for each cylinder and all the adjustments that they required. This new system, hat a lot of Corvair owners use on restored Corvairs, akes the engine start right up and has always been very consistent. I put a new exhaust on it as I'm not fond of loud cars but it still has the throaty rumble of an air-cooled 6 that sounds great without being loud. When it was restored, efore I got it, hey rebuilt the auto transmission. It shifts clean and for those who may not be as familiar with the car, he stock shifter is located on the dash — It's cool. Everyone comments on it. The car drives straight on it's own and does not pull in either direction when breaking. No strange squeaks from any suspension parts. It comes with 60's/70's style aluminum mag rims with Chevrolet logo (I'm not sure of manufacturer of the rims). The tires are in great shape. They are new a bit less than 2 years old and I have not put many miles on them. The interior is in amazing shape. It's not factory original but it's close and has been redone in the spirit of the car but with modern updates. Unless you are a Corvair connoisseur you would think it was stock. The bucket seats are automatically adjustable. The center console has storage and cupholders. So it really has the modern conveniences while still looking true to the car's design. These classic and visually appropriate updates are one of the key things that drew me to the car. Classic car looks — modern features. You can take a look at the photos and see what you think. After having it a while I noticed there are small amounts of what I think is tape barely visible in spots around the vinyl door panels. I'll include a photo but it's so subtle you really have to look for it. They barely show up in a photo. No one else riding in the car has noticed it. The whole interior looks new. Carpets, un visors dashboard, nobs front and back seats it's all ready to go. Windows all roll up and down and all gaskets are supple, ook new and must have been replaced when it was restored. It also has an aftermarket dash protector to shield from the sun. It too looks in keeping with stock, ffers good protection, nd is a nice touch... see the photo. A stereo system has been added to the car and is mounted under dash and set back a bit so it doesn't stick out. It is both convenient and unobtrusive, nd its installation has not affected the original dash and appearance. I've included several photos of the interior so you can take a look and see what you think. The paint on the car is exceptional. The paint is not "show car"and someone who does bodywork and paint on show cars would notice this. However, nyone who just likes older cars would say the paint looks new. After having it a while I noticed there is one spot on top of a fender where they did not sand it out as well as the quality of the rest. You can see it but you have to look for it. I'll note it in a photograph. Overall the car looks really good up close and still has a gleaming shine to the paint. Watch the video I have included and you get an idea of the shine. The video is at:http://youtu.be/a5Mw_dOls0kThe entire engine well and front truck were refurbished in a clean flat black that looks new and the engine is spotless. The signal lights all work and are in really good shape. The dual chrome, ery shinny, ide mirrors are in excellent shape. The convertible top over all is in good shape and the automatic mechanism for raising and lowering it works well (I'm told many were manual not automatic). It also has the black boot to cover the top when it's down and it's in excellent condition. There is one spot on the roof where a repair was done. I will include a photograph of it. The engine is still fairly new on the rebuild. It does drip some oil and burn some too. I only noticed the oil drips if the car is not driven for a few weeks. My mechanic tells me both were inherent in the Corvair air-cooled engine. They both driped and burned oil even when they came off the lot. He worked on them as a teenager when they were still in production. (He isn't very happy with me for selling it. He likes to see it around the neighborhood.) I will also include owner's manual, hop manual, nd original 1965 Corvair sales brochure which is really cool. Purchaser will need to arrange for transportation. I'm glad to drop it off at a transportation hub here in the Austin metro area for shipping. I've had two cars shipped to me and it's been easy to do, ut I've never shipped a car out so the buyer needs to arrange for this. I prefer a paypal down payment, nd a bank to bank wire fund for full transfer of payment. The bank to bank makes it safe for both of us. A casheriers check is ok but I'll hold the car till the bank accepts the check. I have not sold cars on line before so if you have other questions on this let me know and we can talk it out. I've tried my best to describe the car's greatness and the minor items that could be addressed if the new owner wanted to. I'm not a car repair expert. I'm just a fan. I hate to let this go. It's been kind of a fantasy car for me for years but I lost the garage space to store it in. It's been under a cover for the last two months. It's a great example of a corvair... the best I've seen. I'm just a car owner not a dealer and have not sold anything on E-Bay before (but I have very good reviews as a buyer).
