Description of 1960 Chevrolet Impala Nomad

Thank you for stopping in and looking! Up for auction is a ONE OWNER 1960 Chevrolet Impala Nomad Station Wagon. Yes, ou read that right...ONE OWNER! This car will come with the original CLEAR 1960 South Dakota issued title, s well as the original bill of sale from the selling dealership! This is in addition to the original owners manual and original Owners Warranty booklet. The warranty booklet is actually the early version of the later known "Protect-O-Plate", xcept instead of the warranty info being stamped, t was hand written at the time of the original sale!!! This car spent it's entire life with the same owner in the same town in South Dakota for 55 years!!! That in and of itself is RARE!. If you know these cars, ou know that the Nomad was the "Top of the Line" station wagon for 1960, porting all of the Impala trim. This is a 283 2bbl 170hp car with 3 on the tree and RARE factory overdrive! From internet research I have discovered that less than 1.9% of all cars produced in 1960 came equipped with overdrive, aking this a rare option. This option was only available on cars equipped with the 235cu.in 135hp Hi-Thrift 6, i>the 283 cu.in.170hp 2bbl Turbo-Fire V8 (THIS CAR), nd the 283 cu.in. 230hp 4bbl Super Turbo-Fire V8. NOTE--> This option was NOT available on any of the 348 cu.in. produced cars. Transmission gear ratios were as follows:
1st 2.94
2nd 1.68
3rd 1.00
4th 0.70 (overdrive) You will notice that this is the same OD gear ratio used on many GM cars this very day!! Old school cool AND Fuel economy...wow!
The car, aving the Impala trim level, lso came from the factory with the front sway bar!
This one owner wagon was driven daily until being retired in 1980, here it would go into "barn-hibernation" for the next 35 years. The car was stored on blocks, ence the reason it is in as amazing condition as it is! The car still retains it's original drivetrain. Overall this is a very solid car. It will need the LH rear floorpan replaced, ut that is the only floor pan that is bad---the rest are SOLID!
The car will require what I consider to be minor rust repair. The underside of both front doors have holes on the flat area inside of the weatherstrip. The door skins are not rotted on either side underneath, ust on the flat areas indicated. If you know metal repair, hese areas could easily be repaired and look repair free with small patch panels...the doors do not need to be replaced! The rest of the front doors are solid. The back doors and tail gate are solid and rust hole free. The outer rockers, nner rockers, loor supports, nd body mounts are all rock solid. There are 2 holes on the body. One is on the flat surface at the bottom of the A-pillar on the driver side, he other is is under the fin on the driver side. (see pics below). Both of these areas could also be easily corrected with patches, hat if done correctly, ould be invisible repairs. Please keep in mind, his car IS 55 years old and was driven daily for it's first 20 years in South Dakota....not Arizona. Considering how most of these cars rotted away, his one, ven with it's small issues, n in amazingly terrific condition.

As you can see, he front bench was replaced by what looks like a Pontiac bench seat, ut I will be including a correct 1960 Impala front bench seat with the correct side trim and correct seat rails. I will also be including the following: a BRAND NEW EZ-Eyes (tinted) windshield, i>(which this car also came factory equipped with), 2 very nice headlight bezels to replace the bent ones with, RH/LH set of the stainless trim for the rear of the fins (that can be used to replace the dented LH piece), /i>and a very nice fender mounted rear view mirror.. In the pictures the radiator, an shroud and fan are not pictured, ut the car will come with the original fan shroud and fan...no radiator. The mileage is listed as "unknown" because I can not read all of the characters on the odometer, nd I'm not going to guess.
All of the glass is present and all of the windows, ncluding the one in the tailgate, perate up and down as they should.
This car is a perfect platform for a documented high $$$ concourse restoration, r would be perfect for a retro-rod conversion...the choice is yours! These wagons in restored condition have brought between $40,000 and $80,000 at auction. How much the car could be worth when restored all depends on the quality and depth of the restoration performed.
Regarding the internal condition of the engine: I have been asked if the motor turns over freely by hand...and my answer is: I do not know, s I have not attempted to try. I do not feel that trying turn the engine over is a good idea considering that it has sat dormant for the last 35 years. I believe that attempting to turn the engine over at this point would in all likelihood cause internal damage that would otherwise not have occurred were the engine simply disassembled and inspected prior to rebuild. I will say that I know the crankcase is still filled with 35 year old oil, f that information helps.
