Description of 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 |
To start with, et me first say that I am listing this '68 Corvette Roadster L88 Re-creation for a well-known classic and muscle car dealership and in doing so, will be acting as an agent for this dealership. The owner, ho is a friend and someone that I have known for over 20 years, founded his dealership in 1996 and has been a veteran of the car business for over 30 years. All of his vehicles are chosen for the highest standards and quality. A careful and complete analysis is done on every one before they offered for sale.
As to myself, am just a (65) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, recently retired from managing a Correctional Facility here in Maine and had worked for the Maine Department of Corrections for (40) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to who they are dealing with. Even though this is not my own personal car, will always strive to maintain my reputation as an honest and reputable seller. Also, lease check out my eBay feedback which is 100% with (1,134) transactions.

Just a little history on the L88 Corvette: Beginning in 1966, eneral Motors' Regular Production Option codes became the mantra for performance junkies, nd perhaps even more so for Corvette aficionados. Ask any muscle car-aholic for proof—Z28, S6, R1, L1, nd of course, he legendary L88, o name but a few. The new 427-cubic inch L88 V-8 was an outgrowth of the "big block"Mark IV engine program first introduced in the form of a 396-cubic inch V-8 in 1965. GM management had initially decreed that no car line smaller than its full-size lineup should carry an engine larger than 400 cubic inches, ncluding the Corvette. Since the 396 V-8 squeezed in just under the limit, t replaced the fuel-injected 327 in the Corvette as the top offering. Dubbed the L78, ith 425 advertised horsepower, ome 2,157 buyers checked the option block and paid $292.70 for the privilege, ut Chevrolet was about to be upstaged. Carroll Shelby began installing Ford's 427-cubic inch V-8 in his two-seat Cobra, nd Chevrolet engineers were compelled to respond. It materialized for 1966 in the form of Chevrolet's own 427 V-8, asically a 396 with a larger 4.25 bore, n 11:1 compression ratio, nd an advertised 425 horsepower. The engineers went for broke one more time, hich resulted in what is known as RPO L88. Once more, t was based on the 427, ut it had 12.5:1 compression and was topped by a single Holley four-barrel carburetor sucking 850 cubic feet per minute while being capable of running on 103 high-octane fuel. Sources quoted the true output to be closer to 560 horsepower. Chevrolet upped the price of admission, oo—this time with a $947.94 price tag! Ordering the engine required certain mandatory options, nd the radio and heater were deleted in order "to cut down on weight and discourage the car's use on the street,"according to a press release at the time. Just 20 buyers said "yes"and bought what was essentially a racing engine for the street that was given an RPO code. The L88 was back for 1968, his time enveloped by an all-new Corvette. Despite the hefty price tag for the optional engine, 0 buyers signed up for the blistering performance. Contemporary road tests quoted 0—60 mph in 4.2 seconds and barely 8.0 seconds to 100 mph! The L88 came back one final time in 1969, hen 116 buyers said yes before the history books closed the chapter on one of the Corvette's most powerful engines of all-time. In all of Corvette's glorious history, here was never anything like the L88. It was solely intended for racing, nd was so potent that Chevrolet actually actively discouraged its sale to the general public, ven to the extent of understating its actual horsepower rating at 430 HP, ess than the incredibly powerful L71 427/435 HP Tri-Power option; in reality, he L88's figure approached 560 horses. The formula for the L88 engine was both simple and devastating: 4-bolt mains, orged crank, ods and pistons, 2.5:1 compression, luminum heads with huge valves, wild solid lifter cam and a gulping Holley 850 CFM 4-barrel double pumper on an aluminum intake. There were no creature comforts, nd it had to be ordered with transistor ignition, acuum power brakes, special master cylinder and dual pin brake calipers, eavy duty suspension, Muncie M22 " Rock Crusher"4-speed and Positraction.
