Texas 77055 | 281. 530. 6000 1965 CHEVROLET CHEVELLE Z16 "TRIBUTE" 468 CUBIC INCH 475 HORSEPOWER V8 with MUNCIE 4 SPEED DRIVE AN ULTIMATE "SLEEPER" The 396 c. i. Mark IV V8 was brand new and highly publicized in early 1965. Whether a conceived strategy on the part of Chevrolet marketing to whet the appetite of the buying public by installing the new 396 engine in the mid-sized Chevelle. or an effort to simply garner interest in the Chevrolet brand. the Z16 was born! Z16 was the RPO (Regular Production Option) code given to the 396 engine option in the 1965 Chevelle and was used internally by Chevrolet. The Z16 is the 1965 Malibu SS396 and was almost never referred to by the Z16 RPO number except in a few non-public Chevrolet documents. The 396 engine specified for the Z16 was the L37 375 horsepower version. The L37 was a heavy duty engine with forged crank and pistions. 4 bolt main bearing caps. large port heads. an aluminum intake manifold with Holley carburetor and a hydraulic camshaft. Other Chevrolets would also receive the 396. The full size Chevrolet got the 325 hp and 425 hp version. the Corvette benefited from the the 425 hp 396. The Z16's L37 375 hp and the potent 425 hp engines differed only in their camshafts; the 425 hp version received a more radical. mechanical lifter design. Not every dealer received a Z16 - since it was very limited in production - but they were spread out geographically around the country. New York. South Carolina. Florida. Illinois. Kansas. California and Texas dealers all had the 1965 Malibu SS396. While rare. a few dealers actually got more than one Z16! Dealers that specialized in high performance new Chevrolets would receive additional cars. Total Malibu SS 396 production was 201 care with ONE reportedly a convertible. (It is not known to have survived). About 65 Z16 coupes in restored or unrestored condition are accounted for today making them one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars. Now you can stealthily replicate the performance of these legendary hot rods. This "wolf in sheeps' clothing" sports a high performance 468 c. i. 475 horsepower. with a Muncie 4 speed drivetrain to quietly well maybe not totally quietly but certainly quickly. dispose of those pesky new Mustangs in the red light to red light impromptu exhibitions of speed. Basic appearing exterior. with super straight body and minimal brightwork. this was the" soccer Mom's vehicle" of the mid-sixties. A two door sedan. not a two door hardtop. not a Super Sport. but under that skin???Really nice minimal brightwork. nice gaps on all panels. No indication of what lurks within. Exterior paint. interiior door panels and upholstery all immaculately matched and displayed. Matching color lap belts. original style shifter and clean grocery getter appearance. Wood grained style steering wheel. Matching rear panels. carpet and upholstery. Huge. clean trunk with matching wheel spare tire. All new 12 bolt rear with 1:373 gears. new fuel tank. sway bar and exhaust system. Front power disc brakes. drum rear brakes and rebuilt front end. with super sway bar. Ceramic coated headers. power steering. Undercarraige that is as clean as the topside of the car. no rust here. 12-Bolt rear. 1:3. 73 gearsNot really a 396. really a new 468 c. i. . 475 hp crate motor.
