Description of 1969 Chevrolet Camaro |
This Camaro was originally an RS/SS 350 car. The complete and original numbers matching engine has been removed and retained, and goes with the car. BODY: The car is an original code “79” rallye green exterior, which has been repainted to the factory hue in a base coat clear coat. Both rear quarters have been professionally replaced with original NOS GM quarters, not reproductions. Both front fenders have been replaced with original NOS GM RS fenders. The front floor pans and trunk pans have been replaced. The car has a completely new RS hideaway headlight system, that unfortunately remains temperamental. Other items replaced with new components include: brake booster and master cylinder, all brake lines and hoses, wheel cylinders and proportioning valve, power steering pump and quick ratio steering gear box, tilt column, four core radiator and shroud, new AC box and some components, all new wiring harnesses from the firewall forward, front inner wheel wells, wiper motor, gas tank with sending unit, trunk mat, all weather stripping, convertible top, with new pump, cylinders and hoses, and new top boot still in the box. The body is super straight and the paint is a 10 with near perfect gaps all around. The doors are still hard to close due to the new weather stripping, but swing freely and need no adjustments. The exterior door handles, mirrors, rear quarter grills, rear bumper guards, and backup light bezels are original to the car. The windshield molding and rear top body molding are new reproduction. The rear bumper, license plate door assembly, and RS taillight assemblies have been replaced with new reproduction pieces. The windshield was replaced with a new glass, but the door glass and rear quarter glass were not replaced for this build. INTERIOR: The car originally came with a medium green interior, which has been totally replaced with a white / ivory interior, including new seat covers front and back, new custom door panels and fuzzies, new seat backs, new complete headrests, new automatic console (retains original factory horseshoe shifter and gauge package), new AC kick panels, new rear view mirror, new steering wheel, new radio delete plate, new pedal covers, new sill plates, new door welts, new window cranks, and miscellaneous small trim pieces. The dash is original to the car and shows some age, but is not split or cracked. The instrument cluster surround is original to the car, and shows some age. The clock does not work, and the tach is finicky below 2K when the drivetrain is cold. DRIVETRAIN: The current drivetrain consists of a 427 ci COPO tribute engine, based on a 1969 “512” block with correct rectangular port heads, intake, and most exterior engine components. The block has been bored and align honed with deck plates. The crankshaft is a GM 427 forged steel piece, with stock GM rods updated with ARP fasteners, and TRW forged pistons. Final compression ratio is approximately 10.5: 1. The large valve rectangular port heads were re-worked with a 3-angle valve job and new OEM valves and double springs. The remaining valvetrain is made up a Comp Cams Extreme Energy 246 hydraulic camshaft, Comp Cams push rods, and new OEM rockers. A Holley carb, factory points type distributor retrofitted with a Pertronix conversion and rev limiter, OEM chrome valve covers and reproduction open element air cleaner complete the engine. The exhaust exists through factory cast iron manifolds, to dual 2.5” exhaust pipes with Flowmasters. The transmission is a crate B&M Street and Strip TH400 rated to 600hp. The rearend is the factory 12 bolt, with a new Auburn posi, and a new Richmond 3.55:1 gearset, with all new races and bearings. SUSPENSION: Sub-frame connectors have been tastefully installed (bolted and welded) for rigidity, along with the factory X brace. New shocks, leaf springs, shackles, front springs, all bushings and front end components were replaced. The car comes with Billet Specialties 16” Ralley wheels painted to match as a COPO theme. The tires are BF Goodrich Radial TAs. NOTE: The car comes with the COPO wheels only, regardless of what is otherwise shown in the pictures.
