Description of 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS |
I will probably regret selling this very rare and special L78 Camaro but here goes. I bought this car from its original ownerwho purchased it new from Clippinger Chevrolet in West Covina, California. Car still has its original California Black Plates and the original Clippinger plate frame in the rear. For those that don't know, Clippinger was well known back in the day for ordering and sellingmany of the high performance Camaro, Chevelle, Corvette, and Nova "Supercars". This Camaro was actually being driven by Clippingers son as a demo when it was purchased. It is a Special Paint Code "Competition Orange" car that has had one repaint in its original color since new. The Z-Z paint code on the cowl tag shown in my last pic indicates "Special Paint" on my car since it was built in October 1967. Build dates after January 1968 with Z-Z would have been British Green. There are some paint chips and dings with worst being a large paint chipon the right side of the front header panel. The front bumper is also a little bentand the grill is cracked. This Camaro is also showing 9257 miles which the original owner says is pretty accurate other thanfor a short period when the speedometer was disconnected. The car was raced in the street bracket division for many years and sat for many years as well. This Camaro still has its original spiral shocks in the rear, both original T3 headlights, and original keys. The body is all original and very very straight.Doors and trunk close solid and tight and all gaps are factory perfect. Original glass and trim is in excellent condition. There is nearly 0 rust on this car other than a small spot on the lower right fender rocker area, a few tiny pin spots on the right front of roof, and in the trunk pan where some water had sat for a while. That's it. Now for the drivetrain. This is a 1968 SS 396 L78 Camaro which is the 396/375hp version. The original numbers matching 396 has been rebuilt to new by a very reputable speed/machine shop in Burbank, CA called Burbank Speed. It was rebuilt with its original block, crank, rods, intake manifold, distributor, and balancer. The pistons are now 10:1 for better pump gas compatibility and the Cam is a Comp Cams flat tappet solid lifter that is very close to the original. Engine dynoed at 400hp and I do have dyno sheet and receipts on engine. Before I had engine rebuilt the partial VIN on the block pad was barely visible due to previous deckingand did match car's VIN, however, after blockwas cleaned prior to currentrebuild the partial VIN was no longer visible. The MQ portion on the pad is still visible and I know the VIN is still there butmay need to be raised by a method such as acid etching or other methodswhich I have not done. I Guarantee this is the original block to this car. The rear end is the original BV code 12 Bolt. The original front disc brakes are also on the car. The transmission is aMuncie but is not original to the car. The original tranny was broken from racing. The shifter in the car is a Vertigate shifter which is not original to the car. The originalfloor hole for the shifter was opened up a bit to accommodate the Vertigate shifter but no metal was removed and it can be closed back to original. The interior is original and will need some restoration. The dash and dash pad are excellent. The seat covers arevery nice showing very little wearbutwill need new padding. The drivers seat has a slit on the bottom. The original carpet will need to be replaced. The headliner has been removed. I havemost of the parts to get the car running and driving such as the driveshaft, starter, flywheel, clutc, pulleys, waterpump, wiper motor, etc. These parts may or may not be original to car as I have notchecked.A carb. will be needed and maybe a few minor parts. Also, the rear slicks are old and do not hold air for long. Once again, this is a Very Rare Special Paint Code 1968 SS 396 L78 Camaro with 1 previous owner and close to 9257 original miles. I have tried to be very thorough in my description of this Camaro but I'm sure that there may be some minor things I missed or forgot so Please Inspect this car or have someone Inspect it for you before placing your bids.
