Vintage ’88 Camaro IROC Z, Rolling Restoration, in our family since new VIN: 1G1FP2183JL159559 Mileage: 112,543 Interior: Sand Exterior: White Title: Clear Engine: 5.7L V8 with Tuned Port Injection Transmission: TH700-R4 Automatic You are bidding on my Dear Late Dad’s 1988 Camaro IROC-Z, bought new by him from Bunnin Chevrolet in Culver City, California, toward the end of the ’88 model year. The car runs sweetly, and is very quick. Like other IROC-Z’s, it corners flat and tracks well. (If you are not familiar with these wonderful cars, please skip down to the Standard Equipment section.) Much effort has been expended thusfar on the car’s rolling restoration: * The interior is nearly done, with the driver’s seat reupholstered in the matching original factory cloth, the headliner replaced, and new floor mats in the front (with the originals remaining in the back). * The engine was professionally rebuilt (Jim Matson Automotive) at 84,800 miles, using the original block (so that the numbers would match). It has only been run on Mobil 1 synthetic oil. * All of the components in the air-conditioning system were replaced (most recently) at 105,967 miles, and it continues to blow cold. (The R12 refrigerant was also replaced with R134a at that time.) * Everything (but the hatch pull-down and the factory alarm) works as it should, including the gauges, power locks, power windows, and heater. * The original TH700-R4 transmission was rebuilt at 78,734 miles, and shifts perfectly and smoothly, with no slip. The rear transmission mount was replaced most recently at 100,344 miles. * The alternator (generator) and radiator were recently replaced. * The brakes were most-recently done at 84,800 miles: calipers, pads, rotors machined. * New Interstate battery at 84,800 miles. * The engine mounts were replaced at 101,795 miles * The center link in the steering gear was replaced at 95,833 miles, and the lower ball joints and idler arm were replaced at 51,375 miles. * The car passed its smog test in November of last year. * The car has never been in a major accident: all five of the minor dents (that come with the car at no extra charge) are from parking-lot mishaps, four of them delivered by misguided SUV drivers while the car was parked (yeah, that fifth one was me, striking a post with the right front fender while backing up: arrgh). There is a minor dent are in left front fender, a slight indentation in the right rear quarter (hard to see) and a minor crease in the left rear quarter; also, a dent in the passenger-side door. All are visible in the pics. * All four wheel-center hub covers are present Standard IROC-Z original equipment includes: * 5.7L (350 cid) V8 with Tuned Port fuel injection with aluminum manifolding, good for 230 hp and 330 lb ft of torque @3200 RPM (enough torque to reverse the flow of Niagra Falls). * Four-speed overdrive TH700-R4 automatic (now considered one of the finest automatic transmissions ever produced), the only transmission available with this L98 engine. * Hydraulic roller lifters * Five-spoke 16” Aluminum wheels with P245/50ZR16 tires * Four-wheel power disc brakes * Borg-Warner Posi-traction rear end, with 3.27 gears * Huge sway-bars front and rear, heavy-duty coil springs front and rear * Quick-ratio power steering * 145 MPH Speedometer * Front air-dam (integral with fascia), ground-effects rocker panels, and rear spoiler * Dual Exhaust * Leather-covered steering wheel, shift knob, and parking-brake lever handle. * Many IROC-Z badges and decals Optional equipment on this car includes: * Air conditioning * Fog lights * Power seats, power windows, power locks * Cruise control * Fold-down rear seat * Rear-window defroster * Electronic hatch release * Louvered Lamborghini-style rear-window cover * Pin-striping and lower body stripes * Roll-up window-shade-type cover for under-hatch storage * The ERS extended range sound system (not the Bose one) Please note that it does not have the T-top option, as we did not want the extra weight: we found out later that they were prone to leaking and decreased the car’s torsional rigidity, supporting our decision. Included with the sale are about three-quarters of a yard of the matching factory-original cross-hatch upholstery material, about half a yard of the matching factory-original smooth sand-colored material, and a box full of miscellaneous parts, Including a replacement (used) fog-lamp, a headlamp, a used replacement door handle bezel for the driver’s side, and various used power seat-track parts (including some of the aluminum pieces specific to the IROC-Z). Also included are the GM 1988 Camaro Service Manual, the GM 1988 Camaro Electrical Diagnosis Service Manual Supplement, the original Owner’s Manual, the original Warranty And Owner Assistance Information Booklet, and the original 1988 General Motors Maintenance Schedule for Passenger Cars, as well as a Chilton 1982-88 Camaro Repair Manual. Additionally, i have a huge (and mostly complete) stack of receipts for work done on the car, totaling $22,442.01, (not including the original bill of sale – still searching for that). We treated the car like we intended to keep it forever, but i am nearly 69 now, and, though the car has huge sentimental value for me, i must (regrettably) simplify my life. Even without the car, i will still have the memories of the many happy hours i spent with my Dear Late Dad, traveling around the California coast (he loved driving up to Pismo Beach and walking the dunes) and running errands here in Los Angeles. Early on in the car’s life, and well into my Dad’s life (he was nearly 70 when he bought it), he drove it to Las Vegas and took it up to 142 mph, something that i am sure my Dear Late Mom never forgot. I well-remember when he bought the car: it was either the IROC or a Buick Grand National (insert wild test-drives here), and the Camaro won out. It had been sitting on the pedestal on the corner of Bunnin’s lot; for him, it was love at first sight, and he paid cash. By way of full disclosure, there is still some work to do on the car: it will need paint and some minor bodywork. The interior is nearly completed, lacking only the repair of the covering on the center console armrest and the repair of the armrests on the doors (i have a guy here in LA who will do this reasonably, and he does excellent work: Hugo’s, 323-857-1195). If you care, the electronic hatch release will need to be replaced, and the factory alarm system is long- gone. The right-side fog light has a bent mount, and the speakers want replacement. Plus, the ‘service engine soon’ light will not go out, despite having replaced the computer three times. It will also need tires: i was planning on getting a set of BF Goodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S’s ($463.24 for four at Tire Rack) as they seemed to be the best replacement for the current (worn- out) Goodyear Eagle F1’s, which are no longer available in that size. All of this work that remains to be done has been taken into account in figuring the very attractive starting price for this auction. Recently, Hot Rod Magazine called the 1985-1990 Camaro IROC-Z one of the most collectible ‘80’s muscle cars: “The Camaro IROC-Z was a cultural phe- nomenon in the 1980s... a dynamically strong car that had perfect proportions It looked great from every angle and cornered like few other cars then or now...
