I am very excited to offer up for sale a true survivor grade car that belonged to the Great Grandfather of a dear friend of mine. Based on the VIN, Cowl Tag and paperwork that go with it, here is what I have been able to find out: 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe 4 Door Sedan 2100 series 6 passenger, 5 window sedan. Maryland Black. 216 C.I. straight six motor, 3 speed on the tree VIN 14JKH124842
COWL TAG Style: 51 1069 Body: M451 Trim: Paint: 442
The car was purchased as the "fancy" car with which to go to town and church. The owner on all the paperwork was actually the wife (I suppose for insurance reasons?), although she never held a licence! It was babied and pampered while in use and always stored inside. When it was finally parked, in 1974, it was placed on wooden boards, a plastic sheet beneath it, and covered with multiple bed-sheets and a tarp. As of today both the rear tires still hold air and so does the spare. The battery was thankfully removed so it didn't have a chance to do damage. All the fluids are still in place (including the coolant!) and the car was mechanically in good shape when stored. The undercarriage has superficial oxidation but I could not see any holes, the frame itself appears to be in great shape. The glass is OEM and the windows roll up/tilt properly. The interior is void of any rips or tears and all the controls, knobs and dials are beautifully preserved. I was stunned to realize how well the doors, hood and trunk open and shut, the original weatherstripping is actually still soft and still does it's job properly. The body is straight as only an all original car from a scarcely populated area can be, there is some damage at the bottom of the rocker panels and some spots around the bottom of the fenders. This is an incredible "time machine" that shows a patina that many hot rod builders like to try and mimic. There are also 2 extra wheels with tires that appear to have no mileage on them and hold air sitting next to the car. It is the family's will that the car finds another home as the barn where it has been sitting for all these years is starting to show some structural issues. It is conveniently placed in front of a large sliding barn door which is in turn easily accessible through a service road. I would personally clean it and give it a thorough mechanical "once over" and enjoy it sparingly as a true original car, but it's up to you to decide it's future. |
