Up for auction is a '87 Chevrolet Silverado 1/2 ton stepside pickup truck. It's equipped with a 350 throttle body fuel injected engine & automatic four speed transmission. The truck has tilt steering, power windows, power brakes, power door locks, factory air & cruise control. However, in this auction we've objectively listed the good traits & the problematic areas. So that you know exactly what you're bidding on! The Good: The engine runs great; and has excellent acceleration. Fuel is regulated by a computerized fuel injection system, which is a unique feature of 1987 model trucks, as all previous models were carbureted. The 700R4 automatic transmission shifts flawlessly; and its overdrive feature greatly reduces engine RPM's in forth gear. Cases for 700R4 transmissions received a design change in1987. This corrected some reliability issues that exist in earlier 1982-1986 trucks. The Chevy has been slightly lowered & has some great looking chrome wheels with Goodrich T/A radial tires all around; 235-60 R15's front & 275-60 R15's rear. The J55 heavy duty brakes work well, with discs in the front & drums in the rear. The dual cat back exhaust system is new; including the catalytic converter. The chrome front bumper is new; while the original aluminum bright work is in great condition. The body is dent free with only a few small dings, while the hood has some shallow quarter sized dings (see photos). The frame & floor pans are in outstanding condition with absolutely no rust! (See photos). The bed interior is dent free. While the wooden floor planks are fully intact, with no warpage. The tailgate is a new replacement. The interior is fully intact, with good carpets. The gas tank is a new replacement. The battery is a 2017 replacement. The Problematic:
As is typical with old Chevy trucks, there are some areas of rust. These areas are located on the cab corners, rocker panels, lower doors & bed steps (see photos). However, the truck comes with new cab corners & rocker panels. While the remaining lower door patches & bolt-on bed steps are readily available at reasonable prices (check out the net). The A/C compressor & hoses are missing; while the compressor mounting brackets are still present. The original air cleaner is missing. The driver's power window & power lock switches don't function. The cruise control is missing the vacuum diaphragm. Some emissions hoses are not connected; and some associated parts may be missing. The door panels are a bit worn. The door pulls are missing from the door panels. There's a tattered area below the seam in the driver's side seat. The windshield is cracked. The dash cover is cracked. The radio is missing. The hazard switch knob is missing. Even though the truck has some faults, it gets unending compliments where ever it goes! That's partially because it's a great looking red truck; but mainly because it's an eye catching stepside. As to the above listed problems, obviously rust is the big issue. However, anyone with some welding skills can produce a solid body in less than a week! You just need an angle grinder, a MIG or TIG welder & the proper replacement panels, some of which are provided.
Everything else on the list is pretty minor stuff; and any car guy can make short work of it. But some real love put into this truck would reap a truly outstanding show piece, not to speak of some serious financial gains!
Something else to consider about this truck...it's the last of a breed! As 1987 was the final year of Chevy's classic stepside styling. As such, obtainable '87 step sides are few and far between, even on eBay! Just check out the auction history for these trucks. We also need to mention; this is a no reserve auction. Meaning that every bid counts!
