Description of 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible SS |
The day has come for me to part ways with my 1969 Camaro Convertible. I bought the car as a project about a year ago, but don't have space for it any more as a result of a move. This vehicle lived most of it's life in Texas. It is a real 1969 SS car that was originally optioned with a small block V8 with a 4 speed in Rallye Green Poly. The original motor has been pulled and replaced with a 1969 396 BBC with a Muncie 4 speed rock-crusher M21. The engine is a 1969 warranty block, so while not matching numbers, it is period correct. The car was sold out of Texas to a buyer named Mark in Minnesota in 1992. It was on the road for a few years before having the engine pulled and was subsequently sold without an engine to Jason in 2005. Jason parked for 10+ years before the 396ci engine was added (supposedly pulled from a 1970 Chevelle). Jason never got the car on the road and sold it to me as a project car. After pulling the car apart I found that Jason had never replaced the transmission crossmember necessary for a big block (since originally it had a small block). I think he never completed the install because he couldn't get the drivetrain to line up with the wrong crossmember. He cut around the floor shifter hole when it didn't line up, so I purchased a new patch panel to repair the hack job. I've been able to start the 396 and it runs very strong! It has had a rebuild previously because it has new lifters, rods, rockers, springs and cam. It runs and idles very smoothly, so the cam is relatively mild. I replaced the non-factory intake that came on the 396 and replaced it with an aluminum Weiland Stealth intake manifold. I added an aluminum Holley 600 CFM 4-barrel carb and an RPC Distributor w/ electric choke. I have a TON of new parts in boxes to install. I also purchased a LOT of original parts from a guy that was parting out another 396 engine with the same casting #. I have way more parts than you'll probably need, but everything comes with the car and is too much to list individually. Make no mistake...this is a project, but a very complete one. It has almost no rust...just very minor surface rust under the car and a few really tiny bubbles under the doors. The paint is probably 10+ yrs old and in driver condition, but definitely a 10-footer. I was not planning to re-paint it to drive it, but would recommend a re-paint if you're looking for show quality. The top is pretty roached and will need to be replaced, but the metal frame is very solid and in excellent shape. The engine bay has been recently painted and never driven since being painted. This car does not need very many more parts to be drivable. I've got a LOT of parts that will come with this car and can't itemize everything. I have a few large boxes of used parts from the guy that was parting out the other 396. Here are a few of the parts that I purchased brand new and are still in boxes... 1 Hooker Competition Headers (Part Number: 520-2457) 2. Energy Suspension Body Mount Bushings (Part Number: ENS-3-4142G) 3. Energy Suspension Motor and Transmission Mounts (Part Number: ENS-3-1122G) 4. Goodmark Alternator Brackets (Part Number: GMK-4012285691S) 5. Holley Avenger Fuel Pump (Part Number: 12-835) 6. Mr. Gasket High Performance Thermostat (Part Number: MRG-4364) 7. Alternator (Part Number: 213-4003) 8. Starter (Part Number: 246-1091) 9. Full Gasket Set (Part Number: FS8180PT-9) 10. Spark Plug Wire Set (Part Number: 700151) 11. Spark Plugs (Part Number: R44TS) 1 Master Brake Cylinder (Part Number: BHH 10-1505) This is really only a partial new parts list. There are many more parts like hoses, drive belt, clamps, low profile air filter, shifter linkage, etc. that are too numerous to list. These are all new in box aside from the master cylinder (which has already been installed). I also repaired and cleaned the original 2-core radiator, but you'll definitely want a 3-core for the big block. I will include the old 2-core though. There are a few parts that still need to be sourced like a driveshaft, carpeting, and at least 1 pulley, but I'm pretty close to having everything necessary to having this on the road. I just can't work on it any more because it's taking up space in the garage spot that my wife wants to park her car in. Call me with questions. My name is Mark and my cell is 972-977-1030. |
