THE TRUCK:Straight1 owner Arizona rust freeoriginal paint 1979 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado K10 4x4that runs and drives as good as it looks. Documented 109k original miles. It's been garaged kept most of its life as you can see by the original paint & interior. It's unmolested and largely unrestored yet has just been given some tasteful upgrades and mechanical refurbishments. THE HISTORYThis truck is considered a 7th generation Suburban (1973-1991). You can read about the history of the various GM Suburban generations here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Suburban I acquired the truck 2 years ago from the family that originally bought it from the Tucson, AZ Chevy dealer. I've been refurbishing it in my spare time ever since. I still refer to it as a 1 owner truck because I've driven it less than 80 miles. The day I got her she (I say "she" because I call her "Large Marge") fired up with a click of the key. The original TH350 tranny wouldn't budge so I couldn't drive her. She ran like a normal SBC with stock carb exhibiting no smoke or knocks nor any issues except a bunch of normal oil leaks. Engine was removed & bolted to a stand to begin the process of resealing the motor and fixing whatever needed attention. It was a 2 year process. THE RESTORATIONWith the engine on a stand it was stripped down to the long block. Front & rear main seals were replaced along with exhaust manifold gaskets, exhaust collector gaskets & oil pan gasket. New Edelbrock valve covers &gaskets were added. The block and oil pan were steam cleaned then repainted Chevy orange with black accessories and gold exhaust manifolds. The stock intake was resealed with new gaskets. A new Edelbrock 1406 4bbl carb with electric choke was fitted. A freshly rebuilt 700R4 4 speed automatic was bought from a local builder & mated to a good used NP208 transfer case. The 700R4 is a significant improvement over the stock TH350 because the overdrive offers greater fuel efficiency. The NP208 is better than the stock NP203 because it's 60% lighter, using ATF fluid rather than gear oil for better gas mileage. Tranny & t-case were installed with all the proper overdrive solenoid and cross member modifications. Virtually every brake part and brake line on all 4 corners are new, including the master cylinder and proportioning valve. The engine was then installed, tuned & timed with new all everything including new HEI distributor. Factory brass 4 core radiator was refurbished by Performance Radiator and then re-installed with new thermostat and fresh coolant. All the worn belts & hoses were replaced. A new fuel pump, starter and alternator were installed. A new battery and hold down were added. The AC system was converted to modern 134A fittings with new lines, dryer and orifice tube then recharged. There are absolutely no fluid leaks on this truck anywhere. Starts every time with a click of the key and runs smooth like any good 350 Chevybut inexplicably smokes blue out of the left bank on initial start up. Smoke's gone once warm but sometimes smokes blue out of left (driver side bank) at wide open throttle. Either some valve stem seals dried out while on the engine stand for 24 months or perhaps an oil ring got stuck because it seems to get better every mile driven. She drives down the road nice and tight and smooth and quiet. There are no rattles nor steering slop. It stops good as new. The 4 speed transmission shifts smooth into all the gears. Sometimes in low RPM parking lot situations you can feel the power steering pump intermittently stiffening up if you turn fast. Turn slow and it doesn't do it. At higher RPMs it doesn't do it. Pump makes no noise but may need replaced soon. INTERIOROriginal interior is exceptional for the age.Heat blows hot. AC blows cold. All the gauges, signals and lights work except for the clock. The blower motor fan does not blow on the highest speed setting. Carpet and seats are not torn or stained. Dash has some normal sun/heat cracking but less than normal for an AZ truck because it was garage kept. The driver's interior door panel has a crack in the red vinyl of the pull handle and shows some of the typical wear of the most entered door. The other 3 door panels are in remarkably great original shape. Rear window goes up & down electrically as designed from the interior with white toggle switch on center dash. The 4 manual windows all crank up and down smoothly. An older aftermarket CD deck is installed in place of stock unit but doesn't power up. Column shift automatic transmission lever operates smoothly but PRNDL indicator atop center of column doesn't move. It came from the factory with cruise control but I haven't yet driven where I can test it. Split bench rear seat nicely folds down flat to make a giant cargo area. BODY & FRAME:This is arguably one of the straightest original paint rust free '79 Suburban survivors for sale anywhere. Except for maybe the thinnest surface veneer on some parts underneath there's absolutely no rust on this truck. Tucson, Arizona is so dry it's where the US Air Force mothballs all their old planes in case they wish to press them back into service. The 39 year old paint is in great shape for the age everywhere except a couple spots on the hood shown in pictures where it's started to flake off. The glass is all perfect everywhere with the exception of a tiny stone chip that's NOT spreading in the upper 4 inches of the factory tint portion of the windshield. It does have older tint film on some of the window glass that's bubbling. The fuel tank is the optional 31 gallon factory unit. It has a small dent on the leading edge near the rear differential which does not affect the accuracy of the gauge. Somebody installed aluminum step rails along the lower rockers but I removed them. The only evidence is some small mount holes on lower rocker pinch weld. THE LIFTOriginal owner installed a 4 inch Rancho lift with Rancho shocks and steering stabilizer. The Rancho shocks are older but are not leaking and work as designed. The lift springs work great with a surprisingly plush ride. The 33x12.5x15 tires are well worn yet fine for around town but should be replaced before any long road trip. The 15x8 American Racing rims are aluminum. Despite the lift she appears to never have been off road so the frame by the steering box is pristine with no cracking or issues. There is a proper frame mounted class III receiver hitch out back. There is a spare wheel in the back but it's smaller than 33 inches and needs air. DIFFERENTIALS Rear differential - GM Corporate 12 Bolt (30 Spline) 3.42 gear ratio with fresh fluids. Open carrier. No leaks. Much stronger than the 10 bolt with 28 splines that began appearing around this time. Front differential - Dana 44. 3.42 gear ratio. Open carrier. Fresh fluid. No leaks. The 4x4 engages normally as designed with the more modern NP208 transfer case. New Mile Marker manual lockout hubs were installed and engage smoothly. A new rear drive shaft was made to accommodate the more modern 700R4 and the front shaft had new u-joints installed where needed. EMISSIONSTruck has always passed AZ emissions, which is modeled after CA emissions, because nothing has been altered with the routing of the intake or dual exhaust (which is is quiet). The OEM spec catalytic converters reside in their factory locations. Note that this vehicle is also eligible for historic antique plates in all states and Collector Car Insurance through outfits like Grundy Worldwide and Haggerty. The cost for Collector Car Insurance is only about $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy and emissions are forever waived. PAPERWORK Vehicle comes with Clean Arizona Notarized "A box" title, meaning original miles. Never salvaged. SHIPPINGShipping considerations are strictly up to the buyer.
