Description of 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air/150/210 150 |
I have a very rare 1955 Chevrolet window sedan delivery for sale. These were produced form 1955 through 1960 in very limited numbers. mainly for government contracts. These are built on the sedan delivery platform and have a sedan delivery VIN and body number. The only deviation from a normal sedan delivery was the addition of 2 door wagon glass in place of the solid metal panel. The truck has a lift gate and no back seat. It is generally held that the full glass versions were assembled that way on the line. There are other versions where the holes were cut into the metal panels and various sizes of glass installed. These are believed to have been installed by sub-contractors. I have seen varying opinions on how many window deliveries were produced in 1955 with the low being under 100 and the high just under 300. My delivery was purchased by the U. S. Forest Service and assigned property number C-55-196. The Forest Service. as do most government or municipal agencies. identify their property for inventory. The Forest Service did this by stamping the property number on the VIN tag between the Chevrolet name and factory VIN number. The property number does not necessarily identify how many window deliveries they had as all vehicles. or other property for that matter. could be included in the group. The cowl tag indicates the Style Number as 55-1271 (sedan delivery). Body Number as CL 9201 (number in production). Trim Number 501 (straw pattern vinyl/ brown vinyl) and Paint as SPL (special order). There are no code under Top or ACC. Special order paint was generally for fleet sales. but I am sure there were a few that went out to special customers. My truck still shows the Forest Service green in the spare tire well. Overall condition of the truck is pretty good. The body is very straight with no rust that I could find anywhere and what look like all original panels. I have found only a couple of very small areas of filler. The brakes are manual drum and function well. The steering is also manual and is slightly worn. but does not wander all over the road. The suspension is also original. however all springs have been treated to the torch to lower the vehicle. The rear axle is an original 3. 23 open unit. The engine in it now is a 1968 307 with camel hump heads. 4 barrel intake and Edelbrock carburetor. Exhaust manifolds are rams horn with dual exhaust going out the back. The engine runs out nice and does not smoke. It is mounted off the stock front mount locations. I do not know how many miles are on it. The transmission is a Muncie close ration 4 speed and is mounted with side bell housing mounts. The shifter is tight and the transmission shifts smoothly. None of that rocking like with front motor mounts and center rear trans mount. The interior is decent with a nice un-cut dash still mounting an original AM radio. I doubt that this truck originally came with a radio. but an original 1955/56 radio is there now along with bow tie dash trim. truck was originally a 235 6 cylinder with the 3 on the tree. The original stick shift column is still in the truck. All door. side. deck and floor panels have been covered in a thin black carpet. the front bucket seats are out of a 1966-67 Chevelle and are in great condition. covered in a black velour. The black vinyl head liner is in nice shape. All glass is decent with some laminate bubbling on the rear side glass. The truck comes with the 15" American Torque Thrust wheels with new front tires just put on. The 17" Hopsters have sold. I purchased this truck with the intention of building it up to draw attention to a brewery I am opening in Arizona. I planned to remove the glass and put metal in like a standard sedan delivery. Once I realized how rare the window deliveries are. I decided to give someone the opportunity to leave it that way. I have already purchased a power disc brake setup with 2" dropped spindles. tubular control arms. 600 power steering conversion kit. tilt column. 1. 5" front/ 2" rear spring drop kit with shocks and sway bars. a 465HP 355 and 5 speed manual transmission for the truck. These parts do not go with the truck. If the truck sells. I will locate another 1955-57 sedan delivery to build up. If it doesn't. I will continue on with the project with less guilt. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time should the truck sell off of eBay. Contact me at (714) 390-3108 or through eBay with any questions or to come see and drive the truck. This is an old. slightly modified truck and there is no warranty implied or expressed. the truck runs and drives fine. but I am not sure I would drive it to New York. If you are an overseas buyer. please have a local contact who can come look at the vehicle to see if it will pass customs for your country. There are too many rules that I am not familiar with. Deposit is due in 2 days or I reserve the right to re-list the vehicle or offer it to someone else. We can work out pick up times after the deposit is made. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. however I will be available to assist the shipping company if needed. |
