Description of 1985 Chevrolet G20 Van K van |
I'm listing this van with mixed emotions. I initially set out to build a great weekend/vacation rig for exploring the back roads of Central Oregon and beyond. The need for a 4x4 van with high clearance has been replaced by a more highway savvy vehicle. As we all know, life plans change... This is a 1985 Chevrolet 4x4 K van. It started its life as a 3/4 ton G20 van, converted to 4 wheel drive by Pathfinder Off-road, a now defunct company that converted new stock vans to 4 wheel drive before they left the showroom floor. They do what Quigley 4x4 does now. They chose a dependable 4hi/4low transfer case with manual locking hubs up front. The rust free Central Oregon vehicle had 103k miles when I purchased it. The body and frame are as solid as they come for this era van. It has been completely gone through from a mechanical standpoint. Undercarriage coated, body sprayed with Line-X and roof coated with RV roof coating, which means no rust or body scratches in the future. Five new wheels and 32" BFG KO tires. Front and rear custom bumpers with D rings. Leaf springs and shackles in good shape. Custom step rails. AC and heat work. The van was purchased in Bend Oregon from the owner of a custom auto shop. The interior is mostly original Starcraft conversion van build. Wooden dash and fixtures up front in good condition. New carpeting up front. The walls and ceiling are insulated and carpeted. New rotating captains chairs and seatbeltsupfront and original futon/bed in back. Pergo wood floors. Storage under couch and behind driver side length of van. Roof is medium height. Interior height is about 5'1" behind drivers seat and tapers down a bit as you approach the rear doors. New Kenwood speakers and audio deck (CD, AUX, Bluetooth). New 350 small block Chevy crate motor, this comes with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty and is transferrable to new owner. It has been conservatively broken in and has nearly 2000 miles on recent work. New intake manifold, HEI distributor, water pump, serpentine belt, fuel pump, starter, wiring harness, radiator, alternator. FiTech electronic fuel injection system. This is a self tuning EFI system that has on board computer if you care to tune manually. New shocks all around, rear leveling blocks and fresh U bolts. New U joints. Trailer hitch and wiring. Wheel bearings and manual hubs recently serviced. Transmission rebuilt by The Original Bend Transmission Company and comes with a two year warranty. New exhaust, from headers back. The front bay has been lined with Dynamat sound deadener and new carpet. The power windows and locks work as they should. New window visors. USB charger installed in front console in place of cigarette lighter. Four new Phillips crystal vision halogen headlights. Two new KC hi lites mounted to custom front bumper. New weather striping around all doors. New deep cycle marine auxiliary battery wired to charge while driving with a switch to allow you to power the back of the van without draining main battery. The interior house lights and 2 speed roof vent/fan work off aux battery. Custom roof rack with 90 watt Goal Zero panel wired to Goal Zero yeti 450 lithium battery/inverter pack with every imaginable outlet configuration. Custom ladder with 3 gallon Rotopax jerry can, ladder hinges allow access to fuel can. This capable and fun van is in great shape for a 30+ year old vehicle, having said that it is not perfect. This van is not for everyone, it has it's quirks like most older vehicles. The quirky badness: driver side wiper blade doesn't squirt washer fluid as strong as the passenger side does, the steering is a little loose, brakes are at about 60%. You may think the asking price is high, but a lot of money has gone into this rig and you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer, cleaner rig of this vintage. Sure there are 4x4 vans from the 80's for sale for less money but most are rusted out, beat up and the interiors trashed. Please do not expect a perfect brand new Mercedes Benz Sprinter, Sportsmobile or completely refurbished VW Syncro. However, you can expect to pay a fraction of the price of one of those vans. This is an old Chevy van setup to explore. If you're looking for a high clearance 4x4 straight axle van this may be for you. I have tried to list everything worth noting about the van, please contact me if you have specific questions or would like to see specific pictures. Again, I am selling because my needs in a vehicle have changed, the van is still very capable of doing what it was designed to do and has the potential to make someone very happy.
