Description of 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air/150/210 sports coupe |
Built with some very subtle changes to the body, this Bel Air was cut and extended, beginning with a 2-1/2" cut just below the headlight area and tapered all the way to the rear with zero cut. An additional 2" was added to the frame to extend the wheelbase. The front aluminum grille looks original, but was chromed and lowered 2-1/2â€. The bumpers were streamlined and custom-fit. The front A-pillars were chopped 3/4" and sloped back 1â€. The rear of the top was reworked to smooth out and eliminate the normal hump. The car sits on an Art Morrison chassis and features power steering and brakes. Totally custom, the interior features bucket seats, console and custom dash with built-in air conditioning. It is powered by a Chevrolet 502/502hp marine engine that has been balanced and blueprinted. It also has roller rockers and a larger camshaft to accommodate the custom-designed fuel injection system. Much time went into the professional engineering of the induction system for drivability; it is a racing design, the injectors either full-on or off, as all eight baffles open at once. The engine is backed by a 6-speed manual Tremec transmission. The engine started life as a 502/502 (502 cubic inches and 502 horsepower marine racing engine from Chevrolet) that was blueprinted, Balanced, installed roller rockers, and changed the cam to accommodate for fuel injection. Added the one off fuel injection that was made just for this application with the fuel lines hidden. The biggest challenge was to get the race injectors to work politely so we could drive it in normal conditions. The injector are either full on or full off as all eight baffles open at the same time. There was a small fortune spent on setting this engine up.
