Description of 1970 Chevrolet El Camino |
1970 El Camino Big Block turbo 400 12 bolt Buckets Console Tack and gauges carI acquired this car approximately eight years ago. A buddy of mine had it and was going through the restoration process. Unfortunately for him He ran out of time and was getting a divorce. His loss was my gain. He purchased the car with a straight body. with the motor and transmission in the bed. The interior was ratty however it had bucket seats and a console. The car had a long standard Malibu dash as well as a SS dash lying across the seats. Long story short he went through the painful process of getting the bodywork taken care of. I purchased the car with the current paint on it. After purchasing the car from him I went through the painful process of pulling the front clip off. Disassembled the entire front suspension pulled the rear end. rear control arms gas tank brake lines fuel lines exhaust. I went through the tedious process of stripping the whole underbody of the car and Firewall to factory primer or bare metal including the frame. Needless to say eight years after restoration you can still eat off the underside of this vehicle. Now for the build. 1. Painted the entire underside of the car including firewall and frame inner fender wells core support to near show condition2. Rebuilt the entire front suspension New upper and lower ball joints upper and lower control arm bushings new inner and outer wheel bearings and races machined the rotors replaced the calipers with remanufactured ones new inner and outer tie rod ends center link pitman arm and idler arm powder coated the control arms and springs. 3. The 12 bolt was completely disassembled and painted or powder coated Its sporting a new Eaton posi 3 series carrier and a new 342 gear set. The rear control arms have new bushings and are factory boxed in arms With sway bars. 4. The rear drums were machined and the wheel cylinders replaced as well as the brake shoes. 5. Gas tank was cleaned and the sender replaced the fuel lines looked fine so they where left alone however it got new brake lines. 6. The driveshaft was rebuilt with new u joints and balanced7. The car is sitting on original GM SS rims with BF TA radials8. The Transmission is a turbo 400 with a stronger sprag extra clutch pack and one hell of a custom valve body that spins and barks them tires all shifts. The torque converter was built for the car it stalls around 2900-32009. The engine is a 60 over 454 that has been BHJ squared. decked line bored. Torque plate honed. The bottom end is Fully balanced with a steel crank and all ARP Rod Bolts Main studs head bolts etc…The crank is a GM steel crank. The rods are shot peened magnafluxed beams ground re shot peened with ARP bolts pistons are sealed power compression ratio is 9. 6 The heads are Edelebrock performer heads intake is a performer RPM The camshaft is a comp Fully roller cam lift is in the 530 range duration is 225-235 don’t have numbers in front of me. comp pushrods and Harlan sharps roller rockers. Fuel is through a demon carburetor that is instant and flawless. Ignition system is a MSD 6al with a MSD billet Distrubuter and blaster coil. The exhaust is a set of big tube Doug Thorley headers going through a set of 2. 1/2 aluminized custom built system with an X pipe10. The Dash has been gone thru the fuel gauge has been replaced with a new one. the printed circuit board has been replaced as well along with all the bulbs. The original dash with the three round gauges. have the stereo holes enlarged for a CD player. so I went ahead and replaced it with A new dash assembly all the gauges are factory GM with the exception of the fuel gauge. 11. The car is a turn key driver it is one the best motor trans gear ratio combo’s I have ever built it rolls down the freeway able to keep up with traffic yet get good MPG as for power it’s pretty insane 12 Im not sure if this car is a real ss or not. However it has every option an SS does. boxed control arms. disk brakes. front and rear sway bars. buckets. console tack. gauges. big block. turbo 400 12 bolt hump hood etc. So if you are looking for numbers matching keep looking But I can guarantee you that this Elko is a solid head turner. 14. I have all the pieces to finish the car the only thing that needs to be finished is install the lower parking lenses in front fenders and install the bed trim I have all the bed trim with the exception of the right rear corner piece I have A new Driver side mirror passenger side mirror needs to be replaced. 15. I have driven this car on and off for the past eight years it might have 5000 miles on the drive train at the time that I did the motor it got all new power steering pump Lines return house alternator it has a slight power steering leak not coming from the pump. 16.
