S/N 21847L231909 Engine # L231919 T1121QB - Turbo Fire 409 Model Background The Impala's Super Sport option debuted in 1961, and it continued into 1962 and was crowned Chevrolet's top model line in '62. Available as a sedan, 4-door hardtop Sport Sedan, 2-door hardtop Sport Coupe, convertible, and a 6- or 9-passenger station wagon. Each Impala model had its own roofline, including the Sport Coupe with 'exclusive convertible-contoured' hardtop. Fitted with a... sports-car assist bar, aluminum side-molding insert and SS identification, this iconic American muscle car had a big-block 409 CI V-8 with a two 4-barrel induction. Chevrolet described the 1962 Impala as 'a rare combination of qualities' with 'a new look of richness.' Our Subject Car In 1986 the car benefited from a frame off restoration by noted restorer, Brad Ranweiler, and a refreshing in 1990. Everything is dated coded and was taken back to factory specifications during the restoration. No expense was spared, and it shows to this day. Over the course of this ownership, the car was presented with approximately 35 show wins, regionally and nationally. Current owner bought the car in 2002 with roughly 350 miles on the restoration and has used it only minimally since with just over 950 miles showing. This car is accompanied by what appears to be every parts and service invoice from its restoration along with many featured magazines, club newsletters and a huge photo album outlining the restoration. A box of collector's grade automobilia also comes with the car which includes factory owners' manuals, service & repair books and a 1962 Chevrolet Product Training Package, which can be viewed in the photo set. Engine & Drivetrain For '62, Chevy made the 409 bulletproof and desired amongst enthusiasts and repair customers. Advancements in this model year included a re-engineered block with reinforced webs for the main bearings. The engine retained forged aluminum pistons, but were now tin-plated, and the old solid skirts were replaced with slipper skirts to control clattering. Heads were now milled to clear the big valves, meaning there were two different pistons in each engine. A new oil pump also increased pressure to 75 PSI from 40. There was also a new dual-quad option: twin Carter AFBs on the high-riser intake for a rated 409hp at 6,000 RPM and 420-lbs.ft. of torque at 4,200. Fast? Optioned with a four-speed and 4.11 gears, and right off the showroom floor, you were good for a 14.9-second ET at 98 MPH. A 4.56 Posi was the highest option available, which got you a 6.3-second 0-60 MPH time. With the dual Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetors, aluminum intake and solid lifters, the 409 produced the magic one horsepower per cubic-inch, while requiring a new crankshaft, larger bearings, shorter connecting rods and forged-aluminum pistons. Our subject car has all of the top attributes for this model car, with a tidy engine bay that is correctly laid out with only GM factory parts used during its restoration. Interior & Exterior The Super Sport Package was expanded upon in 1962 which included eye catching swirls side moldings, red 'SS' emblems on the rear fenders, vinyl bucket sets with matching dash, chrome dash inserts, center console with the optional floor-shift four-speed manual gearbox. Paint is consistent over the entire car with only one ding on the trunk and a couple small areas of shrinkage. Well equipped with a long list of standard features including aluminum front seat end panels, bright metal backed rearview mirror, built-in door safety panel reflectors, rear seat radio grille, and sport-type steering wheel with Impala center emblem. Some small imperfections are present in the top left of the drivers seat and some checking on the dash.
