Description of 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air/150/210 Nomad |
This is a very rare and desirable 1957 Chevrolet Nomad. The Nomad was very expensive when new, more than the convertible. About 1.5 million 1957 Chevrolet passenger cars were sold that year, but only about 6,000 Nomads were sold.Over the years many were used up and junked and many others were converted into resto-mods with modified bodies, suspensions and drivelines. It's getting hard to find an original Nomad. I purchased this car a few years ago with thoughts of having it totally restored. However, I'm almost 75 years old now and it's time to pass this car on to a new caretaker. I haven't driven it much as I have a totally restored 57 Chevrolet hardtop (see photo) that I prefer to drive. I have taken the Nomad to a couple of local car shows and did receive a best in class trophy. According to the Old Cars Price Guide, this is a solid #3 car, maybe a little bit better:"3) Very Good: Completely operational original or older restoration showing wear. Also, a good amateur restoration, all presentable and serviceable inside and out.""This is a 20 footer. That is from 20 feet away it may appear perfect. But as we approach it we begin to notice that the paint may be getting thin in spots from frequent washing and polishing. Looking inside, we might detect wear on the driver's seat, foot pedals and carpeting. The chrome trim, while still quite presentable, may have lost its sharp, mirror-like reflective quality it had when new. All systems and equipment on the car are in good operating order. In general most of the vehicles seen at car shows are in number 3 condition." The above description closely describes my car excepting the paint is a bit better than a "20 footer, and the chrome is very nice. BODY: The body appears to be very straight and solid. It fits together nicely with proper gaps, etc. Chrome is very nice, windows are very nice. Some flaws in the paint. I took photos of the worst areas They should be the last 4 photos. The trim tag shows the paint #819D (Matador Red/India Ivory) and the interior #697 (Black/Red). So the car is painted the factory colors. Something is rattling in the rear. I think the tailgate needs adjusting. ENGINE: I tried to read the stamp on the engine. I think it is 1227FC The FC means V8, 4 Barrel, Powerglide. When the car was restored years ago, the front power disc brakes were added which includes a double master cylinder. It's better and safer than original. But, if you plan to restore and take it back to original, the drum brake parts are included. It starts easily, doesn't smoke or make any unusual noises, however there is a slight exhaust leak that is noticeable when it is driven. INTERIOR: All dash gauges and lights work as they should. Aftermarket radio doesn't work and I don't think the clock works. I haven't looked at either. Seats have been recovered in the original style and color. Covers are a little loose and seats are a little soft. TIRES: New tires are Classic Radials WSW. They have about 100 miles or less on them. This is my honest description of the car. If I think of anything else I will add it to the description.I'm guessing the 14,589 miles showing on the odometer are the miles after it was restored. If you live in the area you are welcome to come see it and go for a ride.
