Description of 1965 Chevrolet El Camino |
Taking a long look backwards, this 1965 Chevrolet El Camino with its 6-Cylinder Engine and 3-Speed Manual Transmission is how cars were meant to be back in the day. This was the pinnacle of mechanical and automotive sophistication in 1965, the same as cars and trucks sold today are as mysterious and unfathomable to their current buyers. The car represents what was state of the art in the day, a chapter of history that can be experienced and appreciated today. Our car is wonderful to drive as a reminder of what our expectations were at that time. It brings back all of the sensations and experience of the quite running 6-Cylinder motor and the somewhat vague shifting of the converted from column shift to floor mounted, 3-Speed Tranny. It is an accurate and honest ride in the “Way Back Machineâ€. This El Camino is a one owner, bought new in Bend, Oregon at Bob Thomas Chevrolet in 1965. It’s owner worked for the BLM for many decades, stationed at Camp Sherman near Sisters until his retirement to Grants Pass several years ago. After retirement, the car was treated to a needed refurbishment including having the stock engine rebuild and paint. The receipts are included in the large stack of records kept on the car. The complete motor rebuild was done about 22,000 miles ago including a replacement clutch assembly. Paint was done a couple of years later with a color change from the stock burgundy to the matching of their other car’s paint, a bronze Toyota Camry. Matching colored cars in the garage! A common issue to El Caminos is water getting behind the rear window glass and accumulating on the floors. This is our second car to have suffered these issues and repaired with the same way. The panel under the rear glass rusts and it is not uncommon for the floor boards to have serious perforations. As with our prior car, replacement floor panels were laid on top of the damaged areas and riveted to the existing floor as can be seen in our images. Normally the damaged floors would be cut out and the new ones welded in but this is a pretty involved process. Placing replacement panels over the top allows the car to be used normally and unless a complete restoration is being done is adequate to most owners of these cars that are going to be driven on a regular basis as compared to being a trailer queen. This works fine and does not take away from the great experience of owning and driving the car. As the car presented it’s self so well when we first viewed it, we did not send it out to be cleaned, instead leaving it as was as a reflection of the care and upkeep the car received by it’s prior owner. Paint is not perfect, it was driven and there are chips on the door edges and front fenders. The engine has oil on the bottom side and the stock hub caps, not installed but included, have seen better days. The Radio antenna is broken and the fender is slightly deformed when it attaches. All in all, a great car and a great driver, something you could use without stressing about where you parked it or being caught out in a rain storm. As with all of our vehicles, we welcome and recommend a mechanical inspection prior to the close of business. The VIN # is 133805Z139490. Miles showing are 03,596 and it is assumed they are over 100,000 miles. We are going to call them unknown. For more images send us your e-mail address and I will forward them on to you.
