1966 Chevrolet El Camino The El Camino was a direct challenge to Ford's Ranchero, a utility coupe dominating a previously untapped market. GM flirted with coupe-type trucks such as the Chevrolet Cameo Carrier and the GMC Suburban Carrier in 1955, but they went all-in with the El Camino for the 1959 model year. The El Camino was built on a modified Brookwood Station Wagon platform. The first generation didn't last long. It could have been the new flamboyant wings of full-sized Chevys or perhaps the Ranchero's hefty stake in the market, but after just 2 years and 36,409 El Caminos produced, Chevy dropped the ax on the model. After dropping the ax on the original model GM decided to bring it back in 1964 as version 2 which lasted until 1967. For consignment a second generation El Camino which has been in one family since its trip off the showroom floor, and until recently spent its time in Kansas. The car has its original interior, and original 283ci V8 2-barrel carb with factory air conditioning, and power steering. It has recently undergone a respray. Exterior Wonderfully preserved straight steel panels with well minded gaps make up this car like pickup. The black respray is very nice and deep, and has just a few scratches here and there, but nothing major. Plenty of chrome trimmings surrounding the wheel wells, covering the rockers, lining the top of the bed and defining the cabin glass, and all is in very nice mirror-like condition. Front and rear bumpers as well as the front grille present nearly new. The bed of this vehicle shows some scratches from use, but has no rust or major dents. Just a bit of rust is showing thru on the passengers rear lower quarter panel. On all 4 corners are wire wheels covers with faux center knockoff hubs, and all are looking fine. Interior Opening the doors you will have the pleasure of feasting your eyes on the original interior which is in amazing condition. Fawn vinyl bolsters surround wide tuck and roll gold inserts, and all presents extremely clean. Door panels are gold as well, and again very clean just like the seats. The original dash sits proudly in front of the bench and is also amazingly clean. It is made up of a fine mixture of padded gold vinyl gold paint, gold anodized aluminum and faux leather texture black vinyl. All original radio, and controls and all in working condition. The fabric headliner is nice, clean and tight. A standing ovation for the interior please! Drivetrain Nice patina surfaces and all original to this car/truck an orange painted block and valve covered 283ci V8. Decoding on the block has this as being built in Flint Michigan on May 9th, 1966 and verifies it is a 283ci V8. A Rochester 2 jet carburetor feeds the engine, and a Powerglide 2-speed automatic is attached to the back. Way back is a 10 bolt rear. Of special note, a rarely working engine bay light shines brightly with a pop of the clean hood! Undercarriage Straight steel frame and floorpans along with all working mechanicals are seen underneath. Only on the rear fenders do we note some invasive rust chewing at the inner metal panel before the rear bumper it does not appear to have invaded the exterior panels. All surfaces are black and take on the look of having been sprayed with a rattle can. Drum brakes are all around and exhaust system is fairly rust free. Drive-Ability A pleasure to drive, very smooth running and a very nice ride. This car had good acceleration, and came to a stop nicely with no pull. The A/C even worked as did the radio! The clock is inoperable.
