Description of 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 |
1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 I purchased this Camaro last summer to put on the road as a daily driver, and it has been completed successfully. The car is an original Northern Colorado car, and has spent all it's life in this area. I have paperwork from the original selling dealer in North Denver. It is an original Z28 with many options, including T-Tops, Air Conditioning (compressor and condenser removed, but included), Limited Slip differential. It has no rust, and is a very straight and solid car, ready to be driven as is, or while the cosmetics are continually improved. I purchased the car running and driving, though with a head gasket leak. I believe the car was parked when the head gasket leak developed. Read below as I detail the work and improvements on this car to achieve a comfortable and reliable daily driver. The odometer shows ~86k miles, though an intermittent, and now broken speedometer cable has prevented odometer accuracy. I estimate around 120k miles on the car. The car has a clean Arizona title in my name. It is located in Fort Collins, Colorado 80525 where I live most of the year. I titled the car at my vacation house in Arizona as they do not have emissions requirements. I have removed the emissions components from the engine, though they are included with the car. Make sure you understand the emissions status for your area. This is an excellent car, ready to drive anywhere. I am completely honest and accurate below with condition and parts replaced, as I'm sure it will reinforce the value of this great Z28. Engine/Transmission/Rear Axle/BrakesThe 5.7L / 350ci ran well when I purchased the car, but it clearly had a leaking head gasket. I immediately disassembled the motor to fix this problem. The entire top end of the motor was resealed with a Fel-Pro gasket set and reassembled to stock specs. The valves were lapped at this time. The cylinders and pistons were in excellent shape and did not require replacement. I replaced any and all components as needed while reassembling the motor for reliability, see below. I removed the smog pump, and EGR system at this time. This is the first year of the Camaro with an emissions computer. I have removed the emissions computer (included), and replaced the computer controlled distributor with a new Accel vacuum-advance HEI distributor, and the original computer controlled Quadrajet carb with a remanufactured electric choke Quadrajet from JEGS. The old parts are included. All maintenance was done, including plugs, coil, belts, hoses, radiator, water pump, thermostat, fuel pump, alternator, air/oil/fuel filters, all fluids, etc. The motor runs well and strong, and stays cool. The temperature sender was replaced at this time. It does leak a little bit of oil from the bottom of the motor, oil pan gasket and rear main seal most likely. The air conditioning system had leaked all refrigerant. I removed the compressor and condenser, both are included. I have installed brand new heater hoses as well. The Turbo-Hydramatic 350 TH350 transmission works fine and shifts well. I installed a new shift cable, flushed all fluid, installed a new pan gasket and filter, tested the vacuum modulator, etc. As mentioned above, the speedometer cable is currently broken, though I may have this replaced before sale. The speedometer does work fine, but the cable was old and intermittent, and finally bound up and broke in it's sheath. The transmission leaks quite a bit. The rear axle fluid was changed, and I used Limited Slip additive, with a new gasket on the cover. It is in good shape. All brakes were recently replaced before the car was parked, they are in excellent shape. I have flushed all the brake fluid, and the system works perfectly. SteeringAll steering parts underneath car have been replaced. Including all ball joints, inner & outer tie rods, center link, drag link, etc. Brand new tires with warranty from Les Schwab (Venezia Classics) are installed on the stock Z28 rims. The car was aligned at this time (~500 miles ago). The car drives and steers extremely well. SuspensionAll suspension was replaced. Up front I installed brand new MOOG springs and KYB gas shocks. All control arm bushings were replaced with brand new polyurethane bushings. The entire front subframe body mount bushings were replaced with brand new Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings as well. The front sway bar has new MOOG bushings. The entire rear suspension was replaced as well. Brand new 5-leaf Heavy Duty leaf springs are installed, with new bushings and shackles. Brand new u-bolts and hangers are installed. New KYB gas shocks are installed. New polyurethane sway bar bushings are installed as well. The car drives and handles perfectly with all new tires, suspension, and bushings!! InteriorBrand new ACC carpet is installed with rubber mass backing. It is clean and quiet inside. The floor pans have no rust anywhere and are rock solid. The original shoulder belts are removed, as the retraction mechanisms are weak, and let the belts hang. I have installed lap belts on all seats. The original belts are included, and may be able to be repaired. The T-Tops were very loose, and I have installed a new repair kit that seals them tightly, with new metal and plastic clips. I have installed brand new inner and outer window felts on both power windows, they are now tight and seal well to the doors. The power windows are slow, but work well. I have disassembled them and lubed the tracks which helped greatly. The power door locks try to work, but I believe the solenoids are weak. I have installed new door locks and trunk lock, as i was missing a key for them all. 2 sets of keys are included. The headliner is in excellent shape. The radio works great, and original speakers sound fine. The heater and defroster work excellent. The seats are original and serviceable, with a few small holes and stains on them. MiscA brand new gas tank was installed, as the old tank had a crack in the filler neck and leaked slightly. New hanger straps were installed for the tank. A complete brand new custom exhaust system was installed, and sounds excellent. The original exhaust manifolds are installed on the motor, with a stock Y-pipe. The new exhaust is 3" all the way back with a high flow catalytic converter, then split out to 2 single-chamber mufflers, and dumped at an angle at each rear quarter. The air induction scoop flaps were not functional when I bought the car. I re-wound the solenoid that controls them, and have modified the throttle switch so they engage above 1/2 throttle. They work perfectly now, and super entertaining while driving! A brand new windshield was just professionally installed and looks excellent. ExteriorThe car is an original black car with silver stripes. It has had a repaint in the past at some point, with aftermarket stripes installed. The stripes are missing the 'Z28' in the doors, and the 'AIR INDUCTION' on the scoop. The car looks nice, but the paint is clearly lacking up close. There are plenty of dings and chips, and the paint on the hood especially is faded. Some cracks exist in the heavy paint. The body is very straight, and has no accident damage anywhere. The polyurethane front and rear bumpers are in nice shape. Videos Hopefully the links below work, if not just copy and paste them into your browser.
