Jet aircraft and rockets were the rage of that era and no other truck exemplifies the “fins†look better than the 1959 & 1960 El Camino. The “flat†wings out back and the fuselage motif wrapped into the sides are probably the most recognizable of any from that era. The 1960 example featured here is an eye-popping specimen that has been through a ground-up rotisserie style restoration of a very original and low mileage survivor. This car is being sold for a friend. My background with classic automobiles extends for over 40 years. I have built and restored many Corvettes, Mustangs and Porsches and am a member of numerous car clubs including PCA & NCRS. I have judged at many concour events in and around Southern CA. This is a stellar, turn-key automobile at the highest-level of restoration. A solid #1 condition vehicle that needs nothing and runs perfectly. The car is owned by a local collector who also has been involved with classics cars for 30 plus years. The restoration process was extensive and expensive and has been stored and only driven 1600 miles total since completion. The car was built in the Los Angeles Plant and has spent its life here in Southern California. Rust-free SoCal cars like this one are getting harder and harder to find, because people are coming here and taking them away. Body & Paint The body on this car is simply “dead-nuts straight†and appears to have been a virgin body before it went to the body shop for media blasting, in preparation for a color change. The original color was boring white and paint color selected is very similar to the 1961 Corvette color of Jewel Blue. This color is absolutely stunning on this body. Sure they look good in white and red and black, but you will not find any color out there that looks as unique and stunning as this Jewel Blue color. Since the car was media blasted there is not one spec of the original color anywhere to be found on this example. The body was obviously prepared by master craftsmen. I took close up “square†pictures of all shut lines on this vehicle and they are all within microns of each other. The body panels appear to have never been worked and are flat and ripple free all the way around the car. Look at the contours in the side-body panels… you can never make these look this good unless they were perfect to begin with. Site down the sides from four angles to see how flush the door panels are at all four points. I would rate the body on this car at a 9.9. The paint was obviously applied by someone that knew what he was doing. Everything was removed from the car and all new rubber and felt were applied after the paint. This make for zero overspray anywhere. The paint is flat and ripple free over every panel. All the edges were sanded to perfection in the final preparation. I would rate the paint job at a 9.8. A two-stage base clear was used and gives just the right amount of shine to the pristine body in any light. The glass appears to be all brand new. My photographs were shot in a dimming light late in the afternoon and the sun was still sitting on the passenger side and in shade on driver side. I want to point out however that the paint absolutely matches to perfection all the way around the car. In different light the color takes on different hues. The lead in picture and the first four pictures below this write-up offer the best reference to the actual color with the naked eye during daylight. The chrome on the car looks like it was redone when the paint was applied and is very high quality with no imperfections anywhere. I would rate all chrome and trim at a 9.8. The car is sporting a set of 3†Coker white wall radial tires that look just right with the stock wheels and hubcaps. Interior Adding to the car’s amazing cosmetics is a completely new Interior in the original style upholstery. Everything you touch is brand new, including all carpet, door cards, seats, headliner, rubber, felt in the windows, door sills, etc. Nothing was left to chance. I took some pictures under the dash to highlight the new electrical system that was installed during restoration. The Air Conditioning is a modern Vintage Air utilizing a Sanden Compressor. The unit pushes 38 degrees. The undercarriage is in excellent original condition. The floors are perfect. The frame and all components are extremely clean, very original with no signs of any rust or repairs anywhere to be found. The front end was completely rebuilt as well as all of the suspension components. The car drives straight down the road at 75-80 with no hands on the wheel. It brakes excellent and all shoes, wheel cylinders and lines are like new. The engine starts right up and runs excellent. The acceleration is strong and effortless. The 700 R4 transmission shifts smooth and effortlessly. Both units were rebuilt during the restoration with just 1600 miles clocked since completed. One of only 14,169 El Caminos built in 1960. While the 1959 is very similar they are not exactly the same, making the ’60 a one year only car. If you take the total “winged†Caminos of 59-60 you are looking at 34K cars. These cars are rarely taken to this level of restoration. Without question this is the most beautiful and completely restored El Camino’s from this era that I have ever put my eyes on. If you are looking for a car to DRIVE and enjoy... SHOW at local or regional type of events or drive across country, this gem may just be the ticket for you. This is a top-notch restoration, where nothing was left untouched. It drives and rides like a dream. If you are local to Southern California feel free to call to set up an appointment for viewing.
