1979 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe The 1979 Chevrolet Corvette was a much smaller change from the last year. The standard seats are now the lighter weight and taller version that was introduced on the pace car in '78. The passenger seat now folds flat to the level of the cargo area. The L82 engine option has a higher lift cam, special heads with larger valves and higher compression, impact-extruded pistons, a forged steel crankshaft, and finned aluminum rocker covers. A garage kept, newly resprayed, and redone in most areas with improvements to the newer engine, this nice example of the 1979 'Vette is reasonably priced, and has a great color combination to boot! Exterior 72L Red respray covers the excellent condition fiberglass on this sleek design version. All rounded corners, hidden headlights, and a swept back windshield add to its sporty charm. This model is equipped with removable "T" top smoked glass panels and has deep chromed dish rally style wheels all around. Interior Black leather covers the interior, and the high back buckets are dressed similarly to the Michelin man with their puffy bolsters, lumbar supports, and integrated headrests. Door panels are also in black vinyl uppers, black carpet lowers and compliment the buckets. These show slight wear on the plastic surrounding the door levers. A matching black dash houses black gauge clusters. On the center climb from the console we note the radio is missing. A center console, flanked by the bucket seats, has some scratching of paint and overall patina from aging, as seen on the sides and top. Black carpeting is seen on the floors and cargo space, and all shows in good condition. Drivetrain An L-48 350ci V8 with a 4-barrel carb sits in an unrestored but clean engine bay, showing some patina and surface rusting due to the passage of time. This engine is not original to the car and is topped with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and backed by a TH350 transmission in 3-speed automatic format. The rear axle sports 3.56 gears. Undercarriage Some surface rust and fading is seen but mostly unremarkable. Floor Pans are good, and suspension is independent coil springs for the front, and C3 Corvette for the rear with power disc brakes on all 4 corners. Drive-Ability Our example described above fired right up, and on the test track it performed well. Smooth acceleration, good handling, and when the T top is off, nice airflow. The seats are comfy, and all interior functions were working save for the radio which is missing. Some patina, some wear, and some age, but it still holds up well to a keen eye, this example from 1979 has beautiful design (gotta love those round rear 'Vettes) and now its new paint presents nicely.
