Description of 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 |
1970 Chevelle SS - Factory 4 speed. Originally Cranberry Red (75/75) Black Bucket Seat Interior Power Disc Brakes, NON AC Car. This is a Factory SS Chevelle. I do not have the Build Sheet But every tell tale, signature sign is there right down to the bulges in the backup lights. If you know SS Chevelle signs, it has them. This Car would be a great start for a build for someone who doesn't have the ability or desire to undergo major sheet metal replacement. It's obviously a Shell needing body work and restoration... but given what's out there today, it's a great start in the right direction. I BELIEVE based on what i know about the car that it's an original L78 car, but i cannot prove it. I purchased from an older gentleman who bought it in 1974 from the original owner and that's what was in it when he got it. He drove the car for years and sent it to a shop sometime in the lat e80s for restoration - they replaced all the sheet metal I talk about below and essentially hosed him on the rest of the build. The car sat until I bought it unfinished and is why it's in the condition it's in. A detailed description of it is below. EXTERIORThis Car Does NOT require any major sheet metal replacement, other than the hood that has a rust-through spot as shown in the photos. This car HAS had Lower quarters replaced, and I would say replaced very well. They're nice, they're solid, they don't need replaced. The Upper Quarters Still retain the serial Stamps. This car has had the full floor replaced long ago. It is solid and very well done. There is surface rust and scale from some water laying in it from storage, but there are no holes or repairs needed other than cleanup and paint. The Rockers are solid with no rust. The Roof has a few dents from tree limbs and such shedding on the car when stored years ago. There is no rust around the front or rear windows or pillars. There is no rust on the firewall. No repairs needed. The Frame is VERY solid save one spot near the front sway bar mount. it is a dollar bill sized area that needs repaired as it is Rusted through. Worst case, it will require a frame horn from that point forward. It's repairable, but it's going to take some work. The rest of the frame is Solid and has correct boxing indicative of the SS that the car is. Heavy Duty F41 Suspension.Front Power Disc Brakes.Original BB Radiator. Bulges in rear backup lights. Factory Cowl hood *non functional Trunk Lid is good. Boxed SS FrameUnique SS steering coupler Inner Trunk is good. Some surface rust from water laying in it. Does not need replaced. Rear valance area, as well as behind bumpers where they is good. I believe the rear valence was also replaced. There's some crust under the doors which open and close. They do not need replaced. One has 3/8" of filler i broke off of it see how thick it was, and is shown in photos. Need some work, doesn't need replaced. All the Stainless is present.Drive shaft and Cross member are in car. the windshield front and rear are goodI have the original rear bumper pad, and original glue is still present on the bumper for it. I do not have the moldings for the headlights. INTERIORFactory Dash still in car. No Tach. I have the dash pad and it's great.Wiring all seems original and presentI have both front seats which are missing the headrests. I have The back seat(s)There are no Door panels. All of the glass is present but removed. All of the glass tracks are present. The steering column key tumbler in the steering column is broken and needs repair. DRIVETRAINI Have a mostly complete L78 Engine for this car that was in this car when i bought it. The date codes on the block are 2 or 3 weeks before the build date of the body and are correct for the car. it is a 4 bolt main. This is correct FOR the car, but i am not saying it was original TO the car. The heads are Cast iron L78 heads dated incorrectly. The intake is an aluminum L78 Intake with an incorrect date. Original Dimple rods. Original L78 Crank.New Pistons, bearings and seals/plugs included. I have not purchased a cam/lifter set for it yet.that will most likely be on the new owner. no water pump, timing cover, harmonic balancer, distributor, flywheel, or carb/exhaust. The Engine is currently at my machine shop and Having just checked with them, the block has been checked (good) and heads were disassembled. I have the engine build on hold pending the sale of the car. There is no transmission included with this car. Factory 12 bolt Posi still in car. 3:73 Gear. Clear Ohio Title In my name. Sold As is where is. Car rolls easily. I can crate engine for shipping or install back into compartment for shipping. all other parts will fit into car, and I work well with transport companies loading vehicles.
