Description of 1954 Chevrolet Other |
Here is a 1954 Chevrolet Step Van with a Grumman Olson Aluminum body. The Chasis/drivetrain is 1954 Chevrolet 3/4 ton I believe so parts are readily available. This is an old UPS van and most of them were destroyed after service so not many of these are still around. It has a 261 straight 6 that I was told was rebuilt prior to me getting the vehicle. Has a 4 speed granny geared manual transmission that was also said to have been rebuilt. I have had not issues with the vehicle at all since I have owned it. I have owned it for about 4 years and used it for a business that we closed so I have no spot for it. Body overall is in great shape. Runs and drives great. I have driven it to shows up to 200 miles away with no issues. Rear compartment has shelves on both sides. Rear doors open and close fine. Van comes with three padlocks that are keyed the same so the vehicle can be securely locked. The rear axle has been air bagged with a 2 link setup so the rear bumper will lay on the ground. No air tank for the bag system. Compressor switch is in the front and pumps up bags. There is a ball valve inside rear compartment that releases air to drop the bags. Rear compartment has some astro turf like carpet laid down. Fuel tank was moved into the rear compartment and is sitting on the passenger side with a tube that fills from the passenger side entrance area. Probably should be secured better. I never did it and it has never been a problem. Has headlights. fog lights. taillights and turn signals. Also has a Alpine stereo with two speakers up front. Windshield wipers are vaccum powered and both work. but the passenger side wiper arm is loose. Has an interior light in the front and rear compartments. There is an electric fan on the radiator. The dash gauges are inop but there is a set of newer engine temp. oil pressure and volt meter gauges mounted. The volt gauge is not hooked up. Engine has 45psi of oil pressure at idle. The drivers and passenger side doors slide open and closed. I replaced the windows in both doors and they roll up and down. The handles are the wrong size but you can put them on and they work fine. The drivers seat folds down and forward for access and I am also including an additional post so you could fabricate a passenger seat that folds also. These are also super hard to find. No fluid leaks to speak of really. There is some oil build up on lower parts of engine and transmission as is usual with many old cars. but no major leaks at all. Van stops great and I drive it on the freeway when I go anywhere. Remember that this is a 61 year old work van. It does not drive like your new Tahoe. Rattles when driving come from the front doors because they are hung on tracks. There is a non locking partition door between the front and rear compartments. Comes with a new set of porta walls. wide white wall simulators. All but one of the old ones fell off. This is a super cool Van that is not common to see. Im sure that there are some things you could do with it to use as a food truck. show vendor van (That's what I used it for) or advertising vehicle. Since I have owned the vehicle I have only serviced it because I have had not one issue at all. I will change the oil prior to being sold so that its fresh for the new owner. I did not build this can so I will try to answer any question you might have to the best of my knowledge. It has a clear title in CA and it is currently registered and insured.
