Description of 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle

1972 Chevelle Malibu 2-Door Sport Coupe (Big-Block "SS Clone") in good condition. Fun to drive. Gets lots of attention! Drag-car setup with racing seats and harnesses roll cage and no back seat. Solid all-metal body with no rust. Paint has some chipping around the edges (see video) but looks good from 10 feet away. Not a full race car; not a full street machine. Great car for cruising around town or for taking a few passes down the drag strip. I've owned this car since 2002. I've made very few changes to it over the years. It was pretty much as you see it here when I purchased it. I purchased the car in AZ from the son of the guy who built the car but the son was not able to provide many technical details about the car. One regret that I've always had is that I did not make the purchase contingent upon getting details about the internal engine specifications. Here is a "walk-around and start-up" video from 2013 that shows some of the cosmetic defects in the paint: https://youtu.be/2oxAt6if4wc Here are some of the specifications:
  • Clean & clear AZ title
  • 454 BBC (468ci) ... fairly mild low-compression motor
  • Chevy iron oval-port cylinder heads (casting number: 353049)
  • Aluminum roller rocker arms
  • Edelbrock/Carter AFB 750cfm carb (9755)
  • Edelbrock Performer 2-0 intake manifold
  • Edelbrock valve covers
  • 700R4 overdrive transmission with shift kit
  • 12-bolt rear with posi-traction
  • 4.11 rear gears
  • MSD 6A ignition with SS-Blaster coil
  • MSD Adjustable Timing Control
  • MSD Pro-billet distributor
  • 6 point rollcage
  • Rollcage swing-outs on each side for convenience
  • Battery relocated to trunk (has NHRA-required battery disconnect switch)
  • Racing seats with 5-point harnesses
  • Noisy timing gear (produces blower-like whine)
  • Exhaust Headers
  • Dual 3" Flowmaster exhaust
  • Weld wheels
  • New front tires
  • 12-year-old BFG Drag Radials on rear: 275x60r15
  • Front disc brakes
  • Be-Cool aluminum radiator
  • Dual electric fans with cowl
  • Fuel cell in trunk (approximately 10-12 gallon)
  • Holley red electric fuel pump
  • Jensen stereo with 4 speakers
  • Chrome alternator
  • Chrome pulleys
  • B&M Megashifter with neutral safety switch
  • Grant steering wheel
  • Autometer/Autogage gauges:
    • speedometer tachometer water temp oil temp
    • fuel level water pressure oil pressure air/fuel ratio
Unfortunately this car does *not* have certain features:
  • No air conditioning
  • No windshield wipers
  • No parking brake
  • No horn
  • No power steering
Here is a list of the known defects with this car:
  • Rear parking lights do not work
  • Right-rear turn signal does not work
  • Driver-side window needs adjustment (loose when it is partially rolled down)
  • Oil temperature gauge does not work
  • Speedometer light does not work
  • Voltmeter light does not work
  • Electric fan switch faulty (bypassed for now)
  • Chip in top edge of driver-side window
  • Small dent in driver-side door
  • Speedometer needs calibration
  • Fuse panel is not securely mounted under the dash
  • Aluminum dash insert is not fully secured at bottom
  • Fuel gauge readings are inconsistent (bad sending unit?)
  • Reverse lights do not work
