Description of 1962 Chrysler Newport |
This is a neat wagon...its a 1962 Chrysler Newport 4 door hardtop 9 passenger wagon. Pretty rare...the 9 passenger was rarer than the 6 passenger...and I think Chrysler made around 6500 wagons altogether in 1962. This wagon cost over $4500 in 1962 dollars. Mileage listed is just to conform to an Ebay box. This Chrysler was sold new in Connecticut...has an inspection sticker on the windshield from Nebraska..did time in South Dakota..and now its here in California. If you were here looking at the wagon in person and I told you it was from California originally...you would probably believe it. Its a survivor...has one very old paint over the original..so old a paint job in fact that it does look original. Optioned with V8 361 engine, ush button automatic transmission, ower steering and brakes..am radio..power rear window and a few other odds and ends. Look at the original invoice which is included in the pictures. Mechanically the engine runs quiet and has plenty of power..but there is a little blowby coming out of the oil breather cap on the valve cover. Transmission shifts nicely...the suspension is nice and smooth..though one bushing is going bad on the control arm on the drivers front..so when you hit the brakes it pulls slightly to the left at first. Has newer wheel cylinders in the front...just had the front brakes shoes replaced, lso appears to have had a recent job on the radiator and hoses. Also has new tires. Will need an exhaust soon...and can be driven as is with some tinkering along the way as you would expect from a 53 year old car. This wagon was never a field car or a piece of junk...looks to have been well taken care of its entire life. Body is in nice shape for its age. There is a shallow dent on the passenger front door. Some dings and small dents elsewhere...some trim has dings and the grill trim has some dents..but its all here and looks decent. Chrome is getting a little tired as you can expect. No real rust anywhere but the flat area where the rearmost passengers would put their feet. That pan was probably covered with a rubber mat and tended to rust with any water presence whatsoever. That pan needs replacing but its mostly a flat panel. The quarter panel behind the tire on the drivers side will need some attention as well. Whatever leak caused the rear floor pan to rust..also rusted the quarter panel no doubt. Bottom of the car looks to have been undercoated and its protected it well. There are some frame parts of the car that werent undercoated and have some surface rust. No rust bubbling through anywhere... except the rear quarter panel as noted. Inside door corners and tailgate bottom appear good and sound. Glass is all really nice..windshield has a wiper scratch and a bb mark..usable as is but you might want to replace it. Wagon has power rear window which works just fine. Years ago I parted out a similar wagon and have another pair of the curved rear side glass with its trim. Will include them with this wagon for free...I figure its one less thing in storage and though this car doesn't need them in any way..I think its best if they are included. Interior is pretty decent...headliner is good...door panels much better than average for its age..seats look to have been reupholstered..front seat is smooth vinyl. Front seat tracks have been propped up for a short driver...can fit a tall driver as is..but you will need to put the seat back in its original position. Carpet is toast...Dash pad is warped and cracked. All the Astrodome instrument lights work...also the inside dome lights too...when you open the front door the light under the dash pad comes on..when you open a rear door the rear dome light comes on. AM radio works! Most of the electrical I have looked at seems good. One taillight bulb is out and one taillight lens is cracked but still hanging in there. All in all a pretty decent survivor..can enjoy it as is with some maintenance and work. Great candidate for a restoration. Drives very light and smooth for its size and weight. It is currently registered in California, nd the title is still in the previous owners name..but easily transferable to anyone else. Please ask questions...I will consider a buy it now offer...
