Description of 1956 Chrysler Other Custom RestoMod |
This was a 9 year transformation project that began as a 56 Chrysler Windsor, orphing into a modern Chrysler 'SRT8 technology' one-of-a-kind true hot rod. Starting with the original classic lines and style of Virgil Exner's Chrysler Windsor 2-door hardtop as the foundation, verything else about the car was transformed to the drivetrain and technology from a 2006 Chrysler SRT8. This included the 425HP 6.1 Hemi and 5-speed transmission, ront and rear suspension assemblies, 5" rotors and Brembo calipers with 20" wheels and Khumo tires, nti-lock brakes with traction control and Electronic Stability Program, nd more. The technology transition included all the body/drivetrain computers and wiring harnesses, acilitating all the modern features and conveniences of a high-end 06 Chrysler such as power door locks with keyless entry and security alarm, ower windows, ower exterior mirrors, ruise control, tc. A full 06 dash assembly including the HVAC unit was utilized, roviding such features as power tilt/telescopic steering column, ower adjustable pedals, dual-zone temperature control, teering wheel mounted controls, 80 MPH speedometer, ire pressure monitoring, avigation radio with Bluetooth and backup camera, nterior lighting controls, uto-dimming headlight, interval wipers, tc. The interior was completely customized and upholstered in soft Austrian leather. Custom door panels were fabricated to accommodate the window and door lock switch modules and radio speakers relocated from the shortened dash panel. Extensive sound deadening applications were made to both the floor and overhead surface areas, esulting in a very enjoyable sound experience from the Hemi through a 3" stainless steel dual exhaust system with FlowMaster mufflers. This was not the shortcut approach of cutting the complete floor off of a late model car and setting the new (old) body on it, ut rather a complete adaption of the front and rear SRT8 suspension sub-assemblies to the original 1956 Chrysler frame. This retained the frame/body rigidity of the original 56 car while upgrading the handling to that of a modern SRT8 with the benefits of front struts, ull independent rear suspension, ront and rear sway bars, tc. Extensive steps were taken to ensure the correct orientation to retain the proper alignment and steering geometry. The car operates and handles exactly like a modern car, nlike the handling of the heavy cars of the 50's. It's a true dream to drive. The raspy sound of the fast rev'ing hemi is just right, nd the acceleration is amazing. The car was completed in the spring of 2015, nd one of it's first outings was at the Mopar Nationals in Columbus, here it won the award for best street rod. While at this event three magazines did photo sessions of the car, ne of which has already been published at DirectlyConnectedMagazine.com.
