Description of 1948 Chrysler Windsor |
This 1948 Chrysler Windsor Business Coupe is an original survivor with just 69,000 miles from new. The original condition is unusual since most of theses cars were in commercial sales fleets and were driven hard. For many recent years this Chrysler has been a local Sacramento car owned by a prominent local metal fabricator. He used the car sparingly preserving the low miles and original condition. Prior to the Sacramento ownership, the car was owned by persons in the Bay Area. The condition of the interior is remarkable. The wool seats and door upholstery are a true time warp. The door panels are inbeautifuloriginal conditioned with some wear on the armrests. The original floor mats are still in place in the cabin and trunk. These rubber mats are irreplaceable and are just about perfect. The dash looks new with no pitting or paint fade. Under the drivers side floor mat you will find the original carpet has been warnthrough but the passenger side isbeautifully intact. The exterior has been painted no doubt a while ago and is in generally outstanding condition with some signs of age. The exterior chrome and stainless is very nice but does have some pitting on some pieces. The car just benefited from new white wall tires . They were mounted and balanced on powder coated wheels in a contrasting light green which ties to the lighter green used on the interior dash. Mechanically the car drives excellently. It is surprisingly tight and steers very well with no pull. The brakes including master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, and new rear drums were just replaced and operate perfectly. The transmission is Fluid Drive and operated as it should. It is coupled to a six cylinder engine that is for the most part bullet proof. Chrysler used this engine for years through the 40’s, and 50’s. this six made an excellent marine engine and farmers used the six engine to run pumps. While the combination of Fluid Drive and the six will not win any races, it is surprisingly peppy and gets to speed easily. The business coupe model has become a favorite of many collectors. Chrysler Corp made this body configuration throughout the Plymouth, Dodge, De Soto and Chrysler lineup but it has always been true that the Chrysler is far superior quality wise than its other makes. The business coupe was made specifically for traveling salespeople who put their goods in the huge trunk and drove to their point of sale. These business coupes were different looking at the time they were made, but now collectors have appreciated the bubble top and long rear trunk area. The problem is finding a good one since many were used up by commercial fleets and were not saved. More pictures areavailable upon request.
