Description of 1971 Datsun Other |
1971 Datsun 1600 SSS Freshly imported from Braga, Portugal (April, 2016) and now in Richmond, VA. 80,089 original miles. 1.6L twin-carb four cylinder with 5-speed manual transmission. The "SSS" designator was a twin-carb performance model not originally sold in the United States. Cocoa Brown over black vinyl. Absolutely no rust anywhere. Recent respray to high standard, with a very charming and entirely original interior, including original radio, steering wheel and shift knob. Fitted with period-appropriate rally wheels and nearly new Fedima rally tires, but also comes with original Dunlop alloys. Some exterior touches and details in tribute to the East African Safari Rally in the early 1970's, such as front skid plate, rear bumper steps, and included custom headlamp screens. Fires instantly on the choke and runs and drives as new. Recently completed a long trip across the Iberian peninsula and needs nothing to be driven daily. Conveys with a clear Virginia title. Numbers matching car. Our history and journey with the vehicle is documented here: 1971 Datsun 1600 SSS: From Portugal, with Love A link to the photos hosted on Google Drive is here: Google Drive: 1971 Datsun 1600 SSS VIN Note: This vehicle's VIN# is PL510-326512. Datsun did not use 17-digit VIN#'s in the 1970s, and as such the VIN# will not register in eBay's system. There are resources on Google which help decode Datsun's 1970's VIN#s, so I won't get into them here. Thanks! Body: Cocoa Brown paint shines, and badging shows some patina, though isn't too worse for the wear. The rear bumper shows oxidization in the chrome at the passenger corner, otherwise the front and rear bumpers shine. Doglegs and fender panels behind front wheels both look fantastic, with no sign of bubbling or rust. Chassis is clean, original, and rust free. Trunk, frame rails, battery trays, spare tire wells, etc., are all rust-free. Photos below of all the aforementioned. Door sills look like new. Interior: Very original. Seats are untorn, steering wheel is original, and the original AM/FM radio conveys as well (though isn't currently wired). Dash is uncracked. Rear deck lid shows two cut outs for 4" speakers, though the speakers are not present. Floors are solid, and the car has clean carpet - as well as floor mats - in both the front and rear. Original Datsun shiftknob, and original "SSS" horn pad. Drivetrain: Car cranks instantly with a little choke, and settles into a lovely idle. A link to a video of idling, revving, and a short drive can be found embedded below, or here - https://youtu.be/fhbYhxTkUvc. Four-speed shifts clean and easily. The four-screw twin-SU carbs make the 1.6L L-engine feel very lively. Two photos from the Factory Service Manual with engine specifications are included at the bottom of this listing (Thanks Fred!). The motor was rated at 109hp and 103 lbs-ft of torque.
Misc: Vehicle is located at Japanese Classics, LLC, a duly-registered Virginia dealership in Richmond Virginia.
