Description of 1972 Datsun Z-Series |
I have owned hundreds of Z cars over last 40 years of being a Z enthusiast and dealer in exotics and sports cars. I started out rebuilding Z cars 40 years ago this summer. I feel I know them better than most guys, I have a building full of them and a hoard of used Z parts which I could not give away only a few years ago. These days I deal only in Porsches and Used 911 parts as my daily business but have several Z cars in my personal collection. This Z is a late 72 which I bought about 15 plus years ago locally from the original owner. I have its original bill of sale from the local Datsun dealer, all invoices for its modifications from Bob Sharp Racing and Racer Brown. A bit of backgroundon the Z: I often passed it sitting neglected in the owners driveway, it took three years to finally convince the owner to sell it to me. He had it sitting in front of his house locally and it was his pride and joy when he told me of how he was so lucky back in 1972 when he bought it new, he had moved to Florida and took the Z with him. Years later he moved back to Pennsylvania but he simply had gotten sick around the time I met him and could not fix the Z as it needed some typical Z car rust repairs and was not running. But he did not want to sell it. We became Z car buddies and over time I knew one day the Z would be mine. Don assured me the miles were original and one look at the original seats, the dash with no cracks on top and the carpets told me he had no reason to lie. So that's the cars miles and I am confident these are its right miles. He died shortly after I bought it. I have been its custodian now for about 15 years. I went through the Z back then and used it about 2k miles, I did drive it to the Z convention in Syracuse. Mostly I just love the way it runs and it's history of period modifications makes the car such a piece of history. Modified by Bob Sharp Racing with a Racer Brown CamshaftThese receipts including even charges for long distance phone calls are included. Original engine and head. No front and no rear body crash damage ever Look at the seams and top of latch panel for hatch all spot welds and seams perfect Look at the front extensions the hood hinges bolt to. No bends. Original hood with original decal. Original key and it has black paint still on it further proof of its miles. Original radiator Dual oil filter set up braided steel hoses Five speed Transmission put in about 15 years ago by me. Recent master cylinder hoses rear wheel cylinders Recent clutch master and slave cylinder Recent rear fuel filler inlet tank out new original Datsun Gas tank was removed cleaned and resealed inside Properly tuned carbs Original air filter housing Dash: no cracks but lower passenger side just above the fresh air vent knob has heat damage from careless drop light toting Mechanic hanging a hot light bulb there when we worked on the floors. Original Bill of Sale from Automobile City Datsun in Wilkes Barre pa Chromadora wheels Original spare tire Original spare tire hold down Original jack Original tool kit and pouch Solid spare tire well has undercoating from 40 years ago on it Original seat belts with tags on them Original upholstery seats these are not repro covers. Heavy large diameter front and rear sway bars Lowered springs probably Mulholland springs/struts Struts are bad new set of konis new old stock are included Clutch is slipping needs to be replaced with a Heavy Duty clutch set up Shifts fine but will slip if you push it hard. No radio but original antenna works and original up/down button is there Two Gauges were replaced with direct feed oil line and temp. Sun brand. No clock Speedometer and tach work fine Front turn signal housings are in poor condition Lights horn stop lights and signals work Bumpers were rechromed about 10 years ago rear is pitted and wasn't done well see photos Rust: when I bought it I put new original Datsun outer rocker panels on. Had some rot starting over rear wheel arches, I welded in repro overlays which went up about 4 inches. Front rails typical k section above the tension control rod box needed attention some new metal was welded in there.Under battery is stil and was solid.Top of hatch seams never rusty see original line in photos.Backside of hatch see pic with trim off you can see all Seams are solidGas filler area never rusty was nice and solid by gas cap. Floors: when I did car over 15 years ago they were not bad not great, z cars then were not expensive nor worth replacing then with a decent floor so I patched them you can see the rivets from underside of car. A fussy guy might want to replace them but they are not now and were not flintsones floors then. Paint: base clear about 15 years ago stripped to metal windows out door handles replaced with new old stock, hatch and door locks removed, new window seals and weatherstripping at that time. Paint has some age issues, right quarter has a bubble in paint where it was welded. Paint looks ok in pics up close it's showing it's age. Car starts up easy idles fine. New coolant hoses including the hard to do heater supply ones Original toggle style hazard switch with legible original decal Flip up console cover choke line works and CHOKE decal legible Fuse box: not overheated has its original clear cover present Console: has crack by choke typical of these cars if you buy it you should do the modification to the choke lever to mount it to the tunnel not the console Original air ducts are on it by radiator support for fresh air How fast: it is super quick revs and pulls like no Z car I ever owned, the Racer Brown Camshaft is simply a work of perfection. Engine revs very high I respect its 6500 red line and it's really long legged with gearing it is perfect. Exhaust: stock downpipe feeds a large diameter free flow custom made. It does scrape if you are near speed bumps. Sounds snotty when you rev it. Last time driven: about 30 miles today. What's it need: clutch, struts are dead no return on them, front turn signal housings are poor, rear bumper pitted, floors were repaired years ago not replaced might be time to do floors with new ones if you are fussy. Terms: cash no trades no checks no title copies sent ahead and car doesn't leave my sight if it's not paid in full in green cash ( taken by you to the bank a 1/4 mike from my office and exchanged by you there for new green cash by a teller. Not that I won't trust you and where you got the cash from but to keep everyone honest my policy is easy. You get to hand any possible counterfeit money to the bank or if it's legit they give you back legit money all done inside the bank and it goes to me on the spot. And gets deposited in the right amount on the spot. We don't leave the bank carting cash ok. So There will be No cash transaction outside of the bank lobby None. Or you can pay the Z car in full by wire. Title is in my name and titled in Pennsylvania since the Z was new and since I owned it.Pick up deliver costs and arrangements at your expense I will assist with loading the Z on a truck but I prefer you pick it up in person. If you do remember the clutch slips. You can probably drive it a long time but if you get on gas it will slip. Your call on this issue. I've driven it a the last two years slipping but no more than a couple hundred mikes since then. Ask pertinent questions guys but please don't waste your time or mine by trying to discover my reserve or by negotiating a price later or before because simply put I don't care to and won't answer these kind of inquiries. If I get a lot of b/s I probably won't sell it and will end auction if I suspect any fraudulent bidders or nonsense. If you wait till last minute thinking it's cheap don't wait. It won't be sold. You need to stand up bid and own it ahead of time, last minute bidding doesn't work. I will be happy to answer relevant questions but do us both a favor and look the photos over on my website Before asking to see something I already took photos of. The photos were ALL taken within the last two weeks. I will be happy to take any others if they are relevant or not a waste of time. Location: near Scranton Pa two hours from NYC and Philadelphia.
