Description of 1934 DeSoto Desoto |
In 1934 Desoto/Chrysler took a very bold move away from the then square box looking vehicles. incorporating wind tunnel testing the first for its time. Gone were the free standing headlights. radiator shell. and side mounted spare tires. With it's beautiful waterfall grill this car was ahead of its time. The DeSoto Airflow concealed a revolutionary chassis with the interior moved 20 inches forward. Correspondingly. the engine compartment was placed between rather than behind the front wheels. Not only did this new configuration cradle passengers within the wheelbase. but it reversed traditional weight distribution for a front end bias. eliminating fore and aft pitching and reducing rebound motion by 20%. Advertised to go 80 mph smoothly. Desoto designed the frame and body as one unit. with the engine moved over the front axel and the passengers situated between the axles for excellent handling. smooth ride. and weight distribution. This 1934 Desoto Airflow SE is an older restoration showing some wear. It was with the same family for generations and spent much of the past 3-4 decades in dry storage. Always garaged. this Airflow is in excellent shape. Exterior: Paint in very nice shape. good at 10-20 feet. some chips and scratches when you get closer. Original color would have been gunmetal. Chrome is excellent and shines up bright. The rear bumper does have some flaking in one spot. All glass in great shape no cracking ( You notice in the picture one wiper missing. I do have the wiper arm but not the wiper blade so I decided not to install it yet). This car does not have a radio but there is a small hole in the drivers fender for an antenna to be mounted (originally if equipped with a radio the antenna would have been concealed in the A pillar). The exterior rear view mirror on the Drivers door is an after market item. originally these came with no exterior mirror. the are two mounting hole just forward of the door to mount a period correct mirror if you like)DriveTrain: The 6 cyl engine runs excellent. Does have working overdrive and manual transmission. An electric fuel pump has been added to help with reliability. The Airflow shifts well. starts right up every time and stops well. The front passenger brake does stick. I have not flushed the brake system yet. All the other fluids. plugs etc have been changed. New exhaust install. Electrical: All gauges work. all windows work. All lights work as they should. Interior: Missing passenger side ashtray and air cleaner. Front windows do roll in and out. as do the rear quarter windows. Seats front and rear are comfortable with no tears or wear spots and can easily hold 5 people. plus easy to get in and out. Unique design with access to the trunk through the rear seat. Headliner is like new as well as the door panels. Has original heater and flashlight clip. This is a great car to add to a collection and use for family and friends. Always gets attention. even more so when I say it is a 1934. Please email with any questions or wanting picture of something specific.
