Description of 1977 Dodge W200 Pickup

1977 Dodge W200 Pickup

The United States military instituted the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle or "CUCV" Program to provide a cheaper, light utility vehicle to augment the purpose-built-but expensive-Gama Goats and M151 series 1/4-ton trucks that were approaching the end of their service life. The military intended to replace the M715 5/4-ton trucks and any M37 3/4-ton trucks still in service with the new CUCVs.

For consignment a former W200 Pickup with its M884 add ons including a 250 shelter (standard bed with seating) 24-volt, 100 AMP electrical system and communications kit. Now wrapped in silver, (original army green underneath) it retains its 250 shelter configuration, and 4-wheel drive. A recently (less than 500 miles) engine and transmission rebuild and was used as a work truck for a restoration company.

Exterior
With the original army green underneath, areas of silver wrap are now on, and remaining exterior surfaces are bathed in primer gray. The bed is still the original army green, and has the seating installed. Panels are straight and rust free, and overall the truck has an interesting patina. Noted on back is the civilian step up package to aid in entering the back bed seating. Black bumpers are on either end, and black wall tires sans any wheel covers add to the utilitarian look.

Interior
Olive Drab metal covered with some black vinyl trimmings on the doors, along with a nice black vinyl smooth bench stretching from both of those doors is seen. The original dash, very clean is upfront, and rubber flooring protects the metal floors below. A radio delete truck covers all the basics.

Drivetrain
A 318 ci V8 fully rebuilt less than 500 miles ago is within a clean engine bay. Some new wiring and blue block and valve covers also are noted. This mill is topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and has a rebuilt transmission on back which is an automatic. An additional small shifter is located in the hump and actuates the 4WD modes.

Undercarriage
Underneath shows no rust, and a few minor areas of undercoating peeling, but very structurally strong, and oil drip free transfer cases and rear axle. Disc brakes for the front, and drums for the rear provide plenty of stopping power when fully loaded.

Drive-Ability
I gathered up the Classic Auto Mall "troops" and they piled into the back for the test drive. This truck started right up, idled smoothly, and we were off to the test track. Here with my crew in tow I had a nice ride with good acceleration, and handling, the troops stated otherwise, but hey to get them out of the office so what did they care! A nice drive and some fun to boot.

Instead of that "toaster" for your suburbia shuttling of the soccer team, you may want to consider this. Imagine showing up to the match and your team piling out of this truck! Intimidation at its best, and for the off season, some 4WD capabilities. Interesting utilitarian color combo, all working and running smooth. "You're in the Army now...you're not behind a plow, you're diggin' a ditch you S.O.B you're in the Army now!
