Description of 1971 Dodge Charger |
Up forauction is one rare bird (Bee). 1971 was the last year for the Dodge Super Beeand the last year for the heralded 426 Hemi and 440 Six Pack engines. For 1971,there were 5,054 Super Bees produced. From 1968-70, the Super Bee was built onthe Coronet platform. For its’ last year, the Super Bee was built on theCharger platform. Most of these cars received the standard 383 cubic inch highperformance engine. Only 22 got the Hemi, and a few got the 440 4 bbl. Youcould even special order the 340 for 1971 in a Super Bee. Only 99 cars receivedthe 440 Six Pack, 69 of which, were automatic cars. You will not find another440 Six Pack Charger Super Bee with Gunmetal (GA4) paint with a Gunmetal grayinterior. This is the only one believed to have ever been produced from thefactory in this configuration, according to the experts, and through theresearch I did. This SuperBee was built for a Chrysler Executive, according to the build sheet andhistory learned. The car lived in the Detroit area until 2019, when the secondowner (Paul) bought the car from the original owner’s family. The ChryslerExecutive parked the car in his car port in 1976. The next time it ran was 43years later, when Paul freshened the motor, drained/changed all fluids, changedthe plugs/wires, rebuilt the brakes, installed new fuel lines, new gas tank, flushed the radiator, new exhaust, etc. In 2020, he restored the interior as itcame from the factory. This is a complete, matching numbered car. The exteriorof the car has been untouched since it rolled off the assembly line. I replacedone or the front turn signal lenses, as the original was cracked. The originalcomes with the car. The motor and transmission have never been out of the car. Again, all numbers match, including the engine, transmission, body stampings, dashVIN, fender tag, door decal, and build sheets. The car has two build sheets.Separately, they are very partial. Together, many codes can be read, to includeVIN. This car is documented in the Super Bee Registry. BODY FYI - In1970 and 1971, there were two paint colors in the Chrysler line up that wereinfamous for fading unusually quickly. FC7 (In-Violet/Plum Crazy) and GA4(Light Gunmetal/Winchester Gray) were the two colors guilty of this charge. You’dhave cars painted in these colors in the mid ‘70’s with the original paintfading off the roof, hood, and decklid. Research it! The paint onthis car is no different. The only rust is in the very lowest part of both lowerquarter panels, as shown. If restored, small patches for both would be needed,NOT entire lower quarters. The worst, on the passenger side, is the size of aquarter. The floors and frame are super solid, including the trunk floors. There are some dings, here and there, but no major dents. The car has not beenin an accident. All body lines and gaps(deck lid, doors, fenders/quarters) are near perfect. The dorrs closeeffortlessly, with that solid sounding “clunk” when the latch/striker meet. Nosagging. Bumpers are nice to be original. All lights/turn signals work. The originalglass is nice. Wipers work as they should. Headlight doors open and close asthey should. A new, still-in-the box vinyl top from Legendary comes with thecar. INTERIOR The entireinterior was restored in 2020. The following was replaced with new OEM/correctparts, including the dash (not a cover), carpet, seat covers (front and back),sun visors, rear package tray, and headliner. The original door panels wererestored and look nice. I added a ’71 correct buddy seat in the original color.I didn’t get the chance to order the mounting brackets. All dash lights work, horn, etc. There is anoriginal Good Year Polyglas GT G60-15 spare tire with jack in the trunk, alongwith original trunk mat. DRIVETRAIN The originalmotor runs very well to have never been rebuilt. It cranks and idles verynicely, but you can tell it’s not a fresh motor. I’ve driven the car in stopand go traffic in 85-degree weather and it stays under 200 degrees. Whencruising, it maintains 170- 180 degrees. The carbs could stand a rebuilding. Itbegan running a little rich a few months ago. The transmission shifts verynicely. There is a transmission leak. If I drive it consistently, it doesn’tleak too badly….a drop or two. If it sits awhile, it’s worse. Have not had timeto address it. The rear end is a 3:55Sure Grip. There is no whining, weird sounds. INCONCLUSION If you areinterested in this car, please bid with confidence. Good luck finding anothercar like this, with this rarity, history, originality, patina (hate that word),with this kind of documentation. Accordingto most, this car, restored is worth well into the stratosphere because of whatit is. To some, it’ The car is now well known in the ’71 Super Bee/Chargercircles. It remained virtually unknown until 2018-19. I’ve had the car for a year and had the samedilemma that the last owner had – to restore or leave original and enjoy as is.My inclination was to restore, since the interior is finished, but I’ve decidedto put an addition on to my house and want to cash flow it, hence the reasonfor selling this car and two others. The next owner can face the dilemma ofrestoring or not. We took the car to Cruisin’ the Coast in Biloxi last Octoberand had an absolute blast in it. In the pictures, it is shown with Magnums andCooper Cobra tires. These are off my Road Runner. The new owner will get thecar with the original rallye wheels with Good Year Eagle ST’s. Although ST’slook newer, with a lot of tread, they are over 30 years old, so I didn’t trustthem to drive a long distance. Seriousbidders and phone calls only. A deposit of $500 is due at the end of theauction, via Paypal or Venmo. The rest is due at pickup.
