Description of 1979 Ferrari 308 GTB |
THE LAST CARBURETED V8 STALLION This extremely original 1979 Ferrari 308 GTB with only 23,000 miles is a perfect example of the final year of the carbureted 308. It comes complete with all original tools, books and manuals and has recently undergone a complete 30,000-mile service. This is a rare opportunity to purchase an as delivered 308 in its most desirable form. THIS CARS PAST This 1979 Ferrari 308 GTB from the last year of production for the carbureted coupe incorporates all of the desirable updates made during the four year production run including aerodynamic mirrors and gas strut operated tail section. Sadly, '79 was the last year Ferrari would offer carbureted motorcars with their distinctive burbling sound and much higher horsepower than the fuel injected cars that followed in 1980. The example offered here is an extraordinary original survivor example having covered just over 23,000 miles from new, as indicated by its original 85mph speedometer required by US regulations in 1979. Still retaining its original tools, jack and manuals, as well as all the US specification emissions equipment including air pump, air injectors, catalytic converter and even the original smog certification sticker on the windshield, this example is a perfect candidate for Ferrari Classiche certification and all classes of concourse competition including Preservation Class. HISTORY OF THE MODEL The Pininfarina-styled Ferrari 308 GTB was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 as a supplement to the Bertone-shaped 2+2 Dino 308 GT4 and a direct replacement for the 2-seater Dino 246. Its F106 AB V8 engine was equipped with four twin-choke Weber 40DCNF carburetors and single coil ignition. American versions were 240 PS (177 kW; 237 bhp) at 6,600 rpm due to emissions control devices. European specification cars used dry sump lubrication. Cars destined to the Australian, Japanese and US market were fitted with a conventional wet sump engine from the GT4. PRESERVATION HISTORY In May 2015, a complete 30,000 mile service inspection was performe, including cam belt change, new belt tensioners and valve adjustment. Careful examination of this extraordinary original example reveals details that are unique to an original car that appear as new and cannot be replicated by restoration. Representing the final year for carbureted 308s and presented in beautifully original condition, this rare 1979 308 GTB represents a true investment quality Ferrari. MARKET TREND Over the last three years, the value of the 308 has gone up considerably. The 308, following suit with other Ferraris, it would be safe to say their value should continue to increase. Now is the time to gain entry into classic Ferrari ownership. SUMMARY This is a wonderful opportunity to own an original 1979 Ferrari 308 GTB, complete with original and extremely valuable tools and books |
