Description of 1965 Fiat Other GHIA 1500 GT |
After fifty years in service with the Original Owner. this car is still next year's design model and now its for SALE!I purchased this Ghia from INCAR. the Fiat Agents in Bulawayo. Rhodesia in 1965 . It is perhaps the only Ghia in the world that is still owner driven by the original owner. This means that it has been lovingly maintained and restored during its entire life. which has seen it sport five colours - metallic gray. vermilion. yellow. white and now a perle turquoise. Little information has been gleaned from the many internet sources and manufacturers. but it is has always been my contention that this car was one of the first to have rolled out of the stable. These cars were 'hand-built' and certain features have been tweaked to improve and bolster its longevity. That said. it has always been a pretty car and a pleasure to drive. even though it doesn't now have the grunt of some of the modern smaller cars with similar sized engines or the advantages of power steering and air conditioning. In its day. it was regarded as pretty 'hot' and easily did 100 mph. at which speed it was surprisingly stable and easy to drive due to its direct universal linkage to the tight steering mechanism. Being a 'looker' and so very rare. this car always attracts attention and so. although it is a working car. it has a 'concours d'elegance' presentation with all aspects of its upholstery. body work and mechanical excellence being maintained at a 'near-new' operational level. The upholstery is impeccable. the bodywork is newly painted and the original engine is an easy starter that runs as sweet as a sewing machine. Even so. along the way I have collected a 'new' 1500 engine sub-assembly for easy re-installation should this ever be needed. This GHIA has recently passed its 'Warrant of Fitness' on entry into New Zealand. along with a Government certificate of compliance for its seatbelts. I don't drive it much anymore but this says far more about me than it does about the car. for although we have aged together. my maintenance programme has not been as rigorous or as successful as that of the car. and the time has come to part ways so that it can begin a new life in the hands of its second loving owner. |
