Description of 1979 Fiat 124 Spider |
A truly superb example of this incredibly usable classic. Last owner spent $26,000 on just the restoration and looking at the car, it must have been a really fantastic original rust free example. Perfect floors with factory undercoating, excellent body with no plastic filler (I went over the exterior with a kitchen magnet), a deep Royal Blue in show condition, excellent chrome, excellent tan interior, new convertible top, has the boot cover, spotless trunk and engine bay. Engine rebuilt 1,000 miles ago, runs flawlessly, no smoke, quiet valves, no apparent oil leaks, everything in the engine bay painted and detailed. Brakes (power four wheel disc) were completely rebuilt, same with suspension, everything works electrically, has a JVC stereo/CD, starts instantly, runs flawlessly, and really doesn't miss a beat, This is the fifth 124 I have owned and they have always been reliable, effortless to drive, and parts are generally very inexpensive and easy to find (there are lots of parts suppliers in the USA). With its Weber carb, no issue with complicated fuel injection. On the road, this car is a delight......the 2 liter DOHC engine revs easily and has ample power, the five speed gearbox has excellent synchromesh and a short throw, and the power assist four wheel disc brakes offer great stopping power. Excellent steering, ride, handling (with rear axle location via a Panhard rod), roomy trunk, and even room for two kids in the back seat (with the front two seats pushed forward a bit). What else? When I purchased the car, was a bit stunned that someone had spent SO much on a comprehensive rebuild and restoration. But I (and a buyer) can see where the money went as every detail on this car is new, rebuilt, or possibly perfect original. And as most of these cars are just patched, rusted, damaged, or thrown together, this particular 124 must be one of a kind. I have done my best to describe this car. As photos show, there is zero rust underneath, the paint is in show condition, the interior and top are new, chrome is excellent, drive train completely rebuilt and in excellent working condition, I suspect it would be difficult to find a better Fiat 124 anywhere. I would be happy to store it until a buyer finds transportation, would be more than happy to assist in delivery anywhere in the world, and could deliver it within 300 or 400 miles. These cars are definitely classic yet offer the comfort, reliability, and ease of driving of a modern car. |
