Description of 1961 Ford Galaxie |
Here is your chance to own a rare California surf wagon that turns heads everywhere it goes!!This car is super clean but not so precious that you're afraid to drive it. in fact we have taken it on a few road trips here in California with no problems at all. The original 390 V8 starts instantly. runs great. and has ample power since we had it rebuilt with a mild cam approximately 3K miles ago. At the same time. we had the original Cruise-O-Matic transmission rebuilt by the best shop in the area. Paul's Transmissions. We also went through all the other systems under the hood and had them rebuilt at that time (see list below). The car is equipped with aftermarket (under dash) gauges (oil pressure. voltage & water temp. ) - I always like to have these for peace of mind. There is also a rare factory under dash air conditioning unit (rebuilt). connected to a new Vintage Air system under the hood. The suspension was lowered about 2" by previous owner by shorter coils in front and de-arching the rear leaves. giving it a really sweet low stance. Cosmetically. as far as I can tell. the car was repainted once in the original white. The paint is in great condition but we did repaint the door jambs (see photos) as they were a bit scruffy. They are now super clean. and what a difference when you open the door and see that!We removed the old (faded & peeling) woodgrain vinyl and replaced it with new. using 3M's Di-Noc vinyl. There are cheaper wood grain vinyls out there. but we wanted to use the very best product we could find. When we bought the car. it had custom wood interior door panels which make for a super cool look. but they were in poor condition so we made new ones by bonding genuine teak veneer onto marine-grade plywood panels. We used a two-part urea formaldehyde veneer adhesive in a vacuum press. so they will never bubble or peel off. We then applied three coats of marine spar varnish on BOTH sides of the panels. including the edges. Before installing these and the new carpet. we applied Dynamat to the doors and floorboards of the car for sound & heat insulation. We removed and reassembled the window mechanisms. replacing the channels and fuzzy strips. and also installed new rubber door seals. We had all the interior garnish mouldings repainted before being reinstalled with new chrome screws. The new carpet is from ACC carpets. in Ivy Gold and has matching floor mats with the stitched-in Ford crest logo. We have put a lot into this car - it is turn-key and ready to go. Original 390 engine rebuilt. blueprinted & balanced. New Edelbrock Performer Aluminum heads. New Holley Street Avenger 4bbl Carb. (Original carb included with vehicle). Distributor rebuilt. points ignition replaced with new Pertronics Ignitor inside distributor (reliability upgrade). New motor mounts installed. Original transmission completely rebuilt. New transmission mounts installed. New Classic Auto Air conditioning system installed. using original under dash unit (also rebuilt). New Spal electric fan installed. Replaced original generator with new alternator (reliability upgrade & better output)New Optima Red Top battery. New mufflers. Power steering pump rebuilt. Power steering control valve rebuilt. New power steering cylinder installed. Vacuum brake booster rebuilt. New brake master cylinder. New front brake drums & shoes. New dual master cylinder installed. Front suspension completely rebuilt. Front end alignment performed February 2014. 17" Vintage Wheelworks aluminum wheelsNew BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp 2 Radial Tires. New custom teak interior door panels. Interior garnish mouldings repainted. New carpet. New woodgrain vinyl (3M Di-Noc)All window mechanisms (except tailgate) have been disassembled & rebuilt with new channels. All door deals replaced (except tailgate). Dynamat insulation installed under carpet and behind door panels. Electric rear window operates (dash switch and exterior key both work). Original Vacuum wipers marginal. Unit can be rebuilt or replaced with electric wipers. Original AM radio works - but is not connected to antenna. All Heating & A/C functions operate well. Turn signals operate well. and cancel correctly. Horn operates well. Original black California license plates with current tags. Here are things we did not do. which you may or may not want to: - Windshield is the original one with the cool FoMoCo logo - it has pitting from age and could stand to be replaced. - Vacuum wipers are slow - you could replace with an electric wiper motor if you plan to drive in the rain. (We keep this car garaged and out of the weather!) - Vinyl dash pad has cracked around the speaker grill - we elected not to mess with the dash. - Clock does not work - I can pass on the info of a company that has rebuilt clocks for our other cars. All the photos were taken in the last week. but obviously if you are in SoCal it's much better if you can see it in person. This is not a nut-and-bolt restored car (we saw one sell at auction recently for $57K!) - it is a beautiful. solid and complete car in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. That said. it is 53 years old and no warrantee is given or implied. I look at 60's Fords and Mercurys all the time online and I have never seen a '61 Wagon as sweet at this one and I wish we had room to keep this car. It deserves to go to a good home - good luck bidding!!Please. no trade offers and only buyers with positive feedback!!Thanks for looking. |
