Description of 1930 Ford Model A |
For your consideration. 1930 Model A Ford Deluxe Sedan I found this car about 8 miles from my home in 2006. It was stored in an old barn with a wooden floor. At the time I was looking for a 4 door sedan that was never modified or destroyed just left in its original used condition. It was difficult to find 4 door sedans that had good solid wood in them. This one had all good wood in it. because I believe it sat on a wooden floor. The car again was used but not destroyed or modified. The body was extremely solid with no dents. There was rust out below the rear fenders on the top portion of the body but inside. There was a very thin coating of black paint that appeared to be brushed on. That paint was flaking and when I ran my hand across the paint it came off and exposed the original pain underneath. That incident would play an important part in the near future of this car. The original roof did not leak. The front fenders were rusted near the bracket holders. the rear fenders were rusted through where the body meets them. The chassis was solid. it was never bent. broken or rusted out. There were never any modifications to it. The engine was ceased but we eventually got it freed up. See photo of the car when we took it out of the barn. What may interest you is the fact I saw an oil change sticker on the door. The mileage on that sticker was one half mile less than what was on the odometer and it was dated 1954. So what had happened was the car had its oil changed at the local garage and was driven 1/2 mile and stored in the barn. It was never moved since 1954 to the time I took it out in 2006. The reason I explain these details to you is to not only give you the history but to help you understand the process and care that went into the restoration of this car. The restoration became a 2 step process. My intent was to first get the car running. I wanted it road worthy so that we could use it in an unrestored condition for a couple of years. So what we did was to hire a gentleman who solely restored Model A Fords and nothing else as his longtime career. The first mission was to have the engine fully restored. The bearings were rebabbited and the complete short block was rebuilt. The mechanical system was next. It was completely gone through making the car road able. After those items were taken care of we stripped the body of just the thin black paint that I described earlier. This exposed the original paint and gave us a good look at the body condition which was near excellent. Please see photo of the car after this process was completed. We drove the car for the next 3 years in this condition. We then decided to have the same man do a complete body off restoration which took about another 2 years. In that 2 year process everything was taken apart and carefully restored to original factory condition. It was restored up to the point of the only remaining thing that needs to be finished is the upholstery and final buffing of the body and fenders. All interior trim work is painted and ready to be installed see photos. The LeBaron Bonney headliner is installed. I have all the reproduction interior door handles etc. Also included is all the new glass with the rubber seals. Please not in one photo the fender near the carburetor the paint has wrinkled in a 4 inch area do to gas spillage that will have to be taken care of. I have noticed a bit of light paint showing primer on the right front fender edge that should be resprayed. I would also replace the carburetor with the original Zenith one. So in review to complete this car you will need to do the following:1) Purchase and install a complete LeBaron Bonney interior. except headliner. 2) Install pre- painted trim. 3) Install carpeted flooring. 4) Install only the door handles and trim items. 5) Fix and respray the wrinkled paint as described above. 6) Respray the light coating of paint on fender as described above. 7) Buff the car. 8) Install only the glass quarter windows and rear window (glass comes with it. with seals). Door glass is all new and installed. 9) Stripe the body with Apple Green color paint. I hope that you can see that this Model A is one that has had good history and it was then restored properly to an original factory condition using a highly knowledgeable restorer.
